Screen distance from wall with concrete footing

I know the recommended distance from screen to wall is typically 12”. However, I have a concrete footing along the wall in my garage that sticks out from the wall about 7” and is about 6” high. (Pic below)

I will be setting up my Advanced DIY Enclosure from gunghogolf in a few weeks and I am wondering if I can get away with less than 12” at the bottom where the footing is.

im thinking of going 5” from the footing which would give me 12” to the wall from the center of the screen. My thought is that the screen should be a little tighter at the bottom so I shouldn’t have to worry about a worm burner hitting the footing but I’m not really sure.

I also have an old queen size memory foam topper that I was thinking about hanging behind the screen. Maybe that would help if I hang it down in front of the footing?

Does any one have experience with this type of setup? any guidance is appreciated!

Hi Daniel - I think 5" from the footer should be enough clearance, due to how tightly the screen will be fastened to the bottom pipe. To be safer, I'd rather see it at 7-8" away, but if 5" is all you can do, it should be enough. If you or any of your buddies are high-speed players (165+ ball speed), I'd stick with 8" away from the slab and 15" from the wall.

I wouldn't recommend any foam behind the screen - that tends to increase bounceback.

GungHoGolf - can you comment further on this, I've heard from many that say a memory foam mattress 3" thick behind will reduce all bounce-back. Or, a heavy duty moving blanket (which I am considering).

I have a similar footing although it only sticks out about 4 inches. I still put the screen 12" from that to be safe. So it's 16" from wall. Alot of balls hit that low and I'd be worried if I didn't have that much space

Just to confirm, you went 11" from the wall or 11" from the footing? Also, roughly how tall are the sandbags when you fill them?

My concrete footer is about 4". I am 8" from that so screen 12" from wall. I tried 6" and got a fligher back that caught me on the leg. That is....painful. I also put a 4 inch memory foam that is 12 in high and 3 inches thick. I did it just as extra protection. No issues with bouncback for me.
