  • Garage Door Motor

Hey all, finally taking the plunge after stalking this forum for the last few months.

Ceiling height- approx 9’3” from floor
Distance between garage door rollers 16’
Entire distance from garage to back wall is 19’

Desire would be to have around a 8x10.5 impact screen and I’d be building a metal enclosure.

The centered garage motor is my main concern. I am in the process of calling garage specialists to see about moving the motor possibly all the way to the right roller. I only play with righties luckily. Has anyone done this? I’ve seen posts about the only concern being spring pressure and long term balancing. Just curious how common it is to move it over and whether I’ll likely be directed towards a wall-mounted one.

I think for what you are trying to do, I would recommend a jack shaft garage door opener mounted to the wall. That would free up all that space up above not only for swinging, but also for your projector and projected image. I would also recommend a wider screen than 10.5. You have all sorts of room available - I wen't with 8x10.5, which is 4:3, but the image gets compressed from the 16:10 native image and looks a little weird. I think a screen size of 8x12 (which means frame is slightly wider yet) would give you a much better image without being compressed. But, in the end, you have to do what you think is right for your space and needs. Good luck!

If you are using a PC you need to create a custom resolution. Your image should not be shrinking like that.

I 2nd that on the Jackshaft garage door opener. You can mount it over to the side where your wall cabinets are. You will have to run a electrical outlet over to that side.
The only thing I can't tell is if your torsion bar sticks out far enough to install the opener.

They make extensions, though I'm not certain what their longevity is like as I think they're supposed to be a temporary fix until a permanent repair can be made, similar to the torsion spring joiners for broken coils.

As long as your spring tensioner is loaded properly and the actual lift weight of the door is minimal as it should be, then you can absolutely offset the lift motor to the side of center. I did this with mine, moved it 2ft right of center and it works like a charm.

Pirate flag. I have a garage the same size as you. I recommend going as big as you can screen wise. I went 12x9 and I'm gonna end up buying another screen to go 16x9.

I was unable to get a jack shaft opener, the door is not the right style apparently. Anyways, I have my hitting area directly underneath my stock height garage door opener and have had zero issues in over a month of use. Try a couple swings, if the ball is directly under the opener you have zero chance of hitting it with your swing. I don't know why moving the opener is recommended so often TBH.

I think for some setups it interferes with the projector placement since that is the best place for the projector as well.
