Ive been lurking around here for a while now trying to figure out how to best plan my future simulator room. We just got plans back from our architect who has designed a few sim rooms in the past and assured me he knows what he is doing. I just wanted to reach out here for any advice as I pretty much can change anything at this point. I have posted a pic of the current design with measurements. I’m wondering if there is enough depth here (I think I am fine on width) and if the overall layout makes sense with the entertainment room right next door. I appreciate any help and advice!

Help Planning Room for New House

I will add my 2 cents, as I agree with richerod, getting up and out of a sofa when your golfing is not the ideal choice. Curious to see complete room dimensions for sim area but awesome plans as it looks like a nice pad.
The decision we went with was counter height chairs in my set up and friends say they like that over the bar height as it is easier to get up and out as you are sitting briefly. Curious, why does everyone want to dig in the ground? Why not just have 10 ft ceilings in the basement versus digging a section. I think they look cool but practicality, I don't want one. See too many trip or miss a step.
What sim is in the works for this build? And where are you putting your friends bags when they come over? Think about how you will move around the space with golf bags in the room.
Best of luck as you will have to share the finished product.Last edited by Scottygolf; 06-02-2022, 12:26 PM.

Thanks for taking the time to respond!
Right now the room dimensions he has are 20x15. I need to find out exactly where that is measuring to. I wouldn’t have thought about the couch thing so that is good to know.
Seems like I see a lot that have a step down so I assumed it was necessary for the room. If the whole basement has 10ft ceilings do you think it is better to just leave it at the same level or step down to give a little more room above? I think he may be planning 9ft in the basement though so I need to check on that.
From browsing on here I think I will do my build with the EYE XO. Does this space look wide enough that I could put a stand on the wall towards the media room?

Scottygolf has a really great point. Also, if you're using a sim with a computer, include space on your drawing for where the computer sits as it will have to be near the simulator itself. I ran into similar issues as I finished out my very small room build (12'x16'). I needed about 2'x3' for the computer/monitor and a small wooden bar/stool to work at the computer when I need to.What sim is in the works for this build? And where are you putting your friends bags when they come over? Think about how you will move around the space with golf bags in the room.
I also ran into trying to figure out where the 'bags' will go - if I have others over. I may not have enough room, but I did find a corner area with 5'x1' where up to 4 bags could be stood up. Then, you have to consider where everyone will stand - but it seems you have plenty enough room for that with a separate bar and media room right next to your Golf Sim. For me, it's a real challenge and even had my wife stand in some areas as I swung - she was not happy and basically said that it's not likely I will be able to have more than 1 other person over at a time, because they would all be crowded together close to the hitting area (behind and where I would prefer is behind off to the side away from club swing!
Good luck

If I were in your shoes, I would feel more comfortable by extending the length of the golf sim by another 5 feet. This additional 5 feet could be used as the seating and viewing area. I have a sim in my garage and the overall length is 20 ft. I do have an inflatable sofa at the far end and it works. Even though it works, I still feel a little uneasy as it feels like it's too close to the swinger if you know what i mean. I will also mention that when a person is swinging you cant get up from the sofa as there is risk of getting hit on the back swing. my setup is 2ft from wall to screen and 8 ft from screen to ball.

I’m not totally sure as this only has the room dimensions at 20x15. Ill ask him where he has the hitting surface at the moment. From reading on here I think I will be looking closer at the EYE XO which I believe says 10-12 feet from the screen? Does this sound correct? Furniture can for sure be adjusted. Thanks for the response!Originally posted by richerod View PostRoom dimensions seem fine to accommodate the sim however not sure it will be sufficient to have the sofa behind the golfer. What is the distance from hitting surface to the screen?

Uneekor recommends 10-12 ft, but I actually think it depends more on the screen's size and the minimum distance that is comfortable to view from. I have a 10 ft wide screen and a hitting strip 8.5 ft from the screen. If I had a 12ft wide screen I would move the hitting strip back further to a least 10ft.

Thanks so much for the comment! There is the space toward the screen that says “control/equip”. Do you think this looks sufficient and in a decent spot? Ill have to play with the seating and everything to make sure its comfortable but clubs may crowd the space a bit. Ill have to think on how I can find space for those.Originally posted by Brettster View PostLoganlocke18

Loganlocke18 - oh yes, that 'control/equip' area looks fine, how big is that in feet? On second thought though - one thing you may have to consider is that appears to be front/right corner where the screen will be next to that area? If that's the case, I would not recommend it going there as that is the most likely spot to catch shanked balls and everything hit 'right' - so much that you have to provide extra protection there. I used blackout curtains in that area to block shanks, and I have a window - just to the right of my hitting area. You're probably not going to want to place computer equipment there behind a curtain (or other protection) where you have to constantly move the curtain back to make computer adjustments - but that could be just me... maybe you will just setup the game and play 18 holes and not touch the computer - much of that also depends on the Sim/Software you are using as well. Have a look at Ryan5508 post about his curved screen build, where he shows his computer/equip front/left near the screen.
I decided to start a build log for my home simulator project. This will follow the process from start to finish. Currently we are getting quotes from three builders on the build. We are doing a major home remodel with the addition of building a new room for the simulator. Currently my sim is using a stall in the garage. We
Regarding clubs/bags, you could build out a holding bin, where bags can be dropped in, also have a look at Ryan5508 post where he built something just like that: https://golfsimulatorforum.com/forum...089#post353089

And since you asked, I would close the wall off from the Sim room to the media room and put the club rack in that space. You could also put the club rack in front of the 3 chair standing bar. I watched how people moved around in my room and how the bags always seemed to be in the way. Then they were put off too far and just added time between shots. Very easy when it is just you banging balls but when friends are their the experience changes.

Thanks for responding! So you are saying push the step down 5ft back? That should be an easy adjustment to make sure there is plenty of room there.Originally posted by gohandbz8 View PostIf I were in your shoes, I would feel more comfortable by extending the length of the golf sim by another 5 feet. As mentioned above, while you can accommodate a sim in the space, its the extras that can start to affect the layout and the set up of the space.
I'd be happy to chat with you and work things through if you'd like!

Well we are framed out. Plumbing and electric are going in right now so today I took measurements to see exactly what dimensions I have to get screen size and projector positioning figured out (I need to get electric in the ceiling asap) The dimensions of the room to the framing are just over 200” wide, 233” deep, and 129” tall. My currently plan is to work with Carl’s to do the built in screen option. Any input at this stage is greatly appreciated. This is all very out of my comfort zone but its been fun figuring it all out.3 Photos
