  • Sim Remodel 2.0

In the process of a total make over from a garage Sim to Golf Man Cave. Picture of original Sim set up with Skytrak. The first job was to install the subfloor to level garage floor and build wall with door. The painting will be finished this week (Iron Ore) and then carpeting will be installed (TFD Nylon padded). I will post more pics as the progress continues.

Some updated pictures. TFD carpet installed, they cut it too short so lucky I had "rough" turf to edge it out. Installed my speakers and receiver and the sound is great. I am happy with the wall color and contrast to the turf carpet. Carpet putts great also. The process is slow going but hope to have screen up this week and set up new Uneekor EYE Mini. I may need a few days for my body and hands to recover so I can swing a club.

Finally finished just a few small items to complete. I wanted to share some details of the journey in the hopes that it may help someone. First, thank you to all on this site for providing me with some help and vision as I went through my remodel. Special shout out to Roland from Garage Golf who spent some time with me on the phone providing some suggestions and support.
The first part of the remodel was the construction. My garage floor was sloped 2” to the drain on all sides. The most severe slope was right on the hitting area and made it difficult to have a level stance and level area for the launch monitor. Since my ceiling height was only 10’ I really needed to minimize the lift in leveling the floor. Starting at the high point of the floor to ceiling which was 10’ we ripped 2x4x12 pressure treaded studs for shimming. The 2x4’s was drilled and screwed into the concrete. We screwed ¾” t/g plywood to the base. We painted a coat of Kilz primer sealer moisture protection on the underside of the plywood. The floor was solid/level and we only lost 1” total height. Measurement from Fiberbuilt stance area to ceiling is 9’8.25”
Next was to wall off the garage with door. I also needed to move the light switch inside the new wall and add an outlet for the TV. I hired an electrician to do this work and after explaining what a golf sim room is, he suggested increasing the breaker from a 15 amp to 20 amp to cover all the electrical components. So, we ran the wiring for the upgrade to all the outlets. Looking back, I am glad I did. I saw a picture of someone’s Sim room on this site painted with Sherwin Williams Iron Ore and thought it looked great. So, 1 coat of tinted primer and 2 coats of paint and I am very happy with the color.
Turf: I purchased Turf Factory Direct TFD Nylon Special Padded 5mm (20x15). To cover my room dimensions I would need to cut the roll into 2 sections 11’ & 9’, which TFD did for me. I installed this right on the plywood, no padding added, other than the 5mm of padding attached to the turf. However, I am not using this as a hitting surface, so I am not providing any recommendation for such. This turf laid out very nice and is a great surface. I have putted on it and although not a true putting turf, rolls about a speed of many local Muni courses in my area. The padding provides enough cushion to keep the ball from bouncing after impact. I had some “rough” turf that I used as a border around the screen enclosure and added an esthetic look to the space.
Equipment hardware and software upgrades: I upgraded from the Skytrak to the Uneekor EYE Mini. The Skytrak was a good launch monitor just saw the Mini as offering more of what I wanted from a LM. I have been using it now for a couple weeks and so far, am very impressed. I also switched from TGC 2019 to GS Pro. With the LM upgrade and GS Pro software I needed to upgrade from my laptop computer. I went with the CyberpowerPC Gamer Xtreme VR Gaming PC, Intel Core i7-12700F 2.1GHz, GeForce RTX 3060 12GB, 16GB DDR4, 1TB NVMe SSD. and added surround sound with a Denon S570BT AVR. My projector is an Optoma GT1080HDR. My Wi-Fi signal was not very strong causing some issues with the GS-Pro Uneekor connection. My Sim room is the furthest point away from my modem. I added a Netgear mesh system to the house with a satellite in the garage.
The enclosure is a Carl’s Place custom (163.33” x 124.75”) with premium screen. I did make an alteration to the enclosure. My previous set-up I had a moving blanket and foam mattress top attached to the same frame as the screen. This caused the screen to bow out and not have tight image projection. I purchased 4 new 4-way pipe holders from Carl’s and built an extension frame a few inches behind the screen frame. This new extension frame holds the foam and moving blankets and keeps them off the screen (see photo).
Fiberbuilt 6’x7’ studio mat, sealed up the garage door and hung Peaks Tarps to finish off the room.

Looks great! I have that same space heater in my (garage) Simulator set up. It works great.

Agree that heater does a great job. Keep the dial on 1 and it maintains 60 degree temp.

Same heater here on propane, thermostat works like a Honeywell, and I just stuck a small desk fan on the wall aimed up for circulation. Good as convector radiators!
