  • New Garage Sim Build -- Looking for feedback/suggestions

I'm excited to have discovered this forum as I embark on my first ever sim build ... there's a wealth of great info here!

Recently moved into a new house with a separate one-car garage that we don't need for a car, so it's a no-brainer to convert it to a golf room!

It's about 14 ft wide x 24.5 ft long (of useable space), 11 ft ceiling. Based on reading online articles and the posts here, I've already pulled the trigger on a few items, but would love input on the others:

Already got the Bushnell Launch Pro launch monitor and intend to run GSPro software. Ordered a gaming desktop PC as well. Bought a Holy Grail hitting strip which I plan to insert into the gym mat tile/Home Depot astroturf DIY mat that I've seen others here use.

One question I have ... what's the best base for the gym mats? I've seen a few different answers here and now leaning toward building a platform of 2 x 4s and plywood for two reasons:
    1. Garage not precisely level for drainage ... I've seen others reference this. Does that difference (we're talking a fraction of an inch at the point where I'll have the hitting strip) affect the accuracy of the BLP?
    2. Wondering about airflow on the concrete floor. I had a home gym in the basement at our old house with gym mats directly on the basement concrete and noticed a moldy/musty buildup over time. I'm no scientist or builder but assumed it had something to do with the natural humidity and contrasting temps of the concrete and surrounding air.
So, leaning toward following some of the posts here in building a platform but was open to any advice or explanations as to my thinking.

Planning to get a Carl's DIY enclosure kit. Still looking for impact screen and projector ... open to suggestions on any of that.

Thoughts? Anything else I need to consider?

Thanks in advance for your help ... really excited to get this project going!

Just put a rain barrier over the concrete floor and then the gym mats on top. Something like this:

    I have this projector:

BenQ’s flagship 4K projector for golf & cinema—5100lm laser, vivid color, and support for home automation control system integration.

    And this screen:

Golf Impact Screens that Bring The Fairway to You You don't need a country club budget to get a pro-level hitting surface. Carl's golf impact screens are the heavy-duty engine of your home golf setup, engineered to handle 250 mph screamers without flinching. Available in a range of sizes and aspect ratios to perfectly fit your projected image.

Get the one with the flaps. It covers the grommet holes. I also got the premium one but from what I gather it doesn't matter all that much.

It does not have to be perfectly level. The reads don't change based on that. Just launch angle and spin.

You can add an underlayment between the concrete and foam tiles, it's just a moisture barrier.

The slope of your garage might not be a big deal. Some are sloped more than others, mine is only 0.5deg so not a big deal. The BLP will correct for any slope.

An alternative to foam tiles is UltraBase panels. They're 2" tall and meant for indoor and outdoor use so they're great for drainage. So they can sit directly on concrete and would never get any weird mold smell because the concrete can still breathe.

Lots of screen options. If you get the Carls DIY kit, it comes with a screen. Get Premium quality screen. I sell screens and enclosures from Indoor Golf Shop, very similar. Personally, with that space, I wouldn't do an enclosure. I would have the screen go wall to wall and can have padding or curtains on the walls and ceiling.

Lots of projector options. I have the LK936ST as well, it's the flagship 4k projector for golf sims.

I own a sim business and sell all this stuff, at great prices (have to contact me for special prices on some items) and typically no sales tax. And I help people pick out components for their sim that work with their space and budget.
