  • Stance Mat/Hitting Strip Build Help

In the process of building a retractable screen garage set up. I'm struggling to decide what to do with my golf mat.

Unfortunately I'm a lefty and everyone i know is not (of course), so I would like to do a larger stance mat, maybe 5'x10', then get a nice hitting strip to put in the middle.

I'd like it to be semi-portable so I can move it to the side at least to use some of the garage still when I'm done, but I can't afford like the big SIG Pro mats.

Anyone have experience building a stance mat/hitting strip combo like this? I'm having trouble matching up the height of a hitting strip and the height of a stance mat - also just finding a way to make a stance mat that isn't super expensive.

Ceilings are only 9'4", so I dont want to build a super thick mat, though that may not be an issue.

Considering the Beaver Tail hitting strip, which is pretty thick (2.125" thick), or the Rain or Shine SwingTurf strip (1 and 5/8" thick).

    Any help or suggestions welcome!!

Get a 4x8 sheet of plywood and rip it in half. Get 2x4's and lay them on the side and attach it to the plywood. Then cover the plywood in indoor outdoor carpet or something similar. You'll have two stance sections and then place the hitting strip in the middle. The thickness of the plywood will be dependent upon the thickness of your hitting strip. 2x4 is 1.5" thick + carpet thickness + plywood thickness = thickness of hitting strip. You can join the front and back side of the hitting sections together with a flat piece of aluminum or L channel aluminum. You just drill in a screw on each hitting section and leave it sticking out about a 1/4" and notch out the aluminum to line up with the screws. When playing lay down each section and the hitting section and then just slide the aluminum down over the exposed screws, it will keep everything in place. Good thing about 4x4' sections is they can be rotated when the stance area starts to wear.
