  • Need Advice for New Build

Hello All, I am looking to put a sim in my basement. Needing help/advice on if it will fit. From current floor (carpet) to ceiling is approx. 8’ 7.5”, I can full swing my driver without hitting the ceiling. My concern is when I add a hitting mat that I might be too close to the ceiling… was thinking about attaching padding squares to the ceiling. Does anyone have ideas of options available or should I give up on putting the sim in the basement and move to the garage? Only issue in moving to the garage is the added expense of raising garage door track & motor and adding climate control. Thanks in advance!!

That is a bit short. My ceiling is about one to two inches higher than yours depending on where it is measured. My hitting pad is about 1.5 in thick. So the ceiling is about 8 ft 7.5 in above the hitting mat. Most people do not come close to the ceiling, but I have had two buddies with upright swings hit the ceiling. Not often, but it has happened. So, I would say you're on the edge of having issues with that ceiling height.

Stonebattle - Thank you for the response. That is what I was thinking… more towards if i have people over and not knowing their swing or just them being taller than me.

I am in the process of researching simulators for a potential business startup and what I have read so far is that I want to have a minimum of a 10 ft high ceiling. I realize my context is a little different but most pre-fab enclosures I've researched seem to be at least 10 ft in height. The logic as I've understood it is that taller players may not feel comfortable taking full swings on something with a lower height clearance. I have to be a bit more cognizant of that given I'm trying to enter the commercial side. I don't see building it according to your needed specs being the problem. I think it would be taller individuals either not feeling comfortable taking full swings or those who do potentially hitting the ceiling. If you do decide to put a simulator in that space, I agree with your idea of adding padding. It not only provides some protection from full swings but it also helps protect against someone swinging underneath a golf ball, popping it straight up and hitting the ceiling too.
