  • Hello

    good morning,

I am new to the sim game and like to research everything before I buy, most times to the point of talking myself out of what ever it may be. The more I look at the threads here the more unsure I am about options. I was set on a Skytrak set up before spending hours on here reading about all the set ups, it's like information overload in here lol. After all the years on the internet this is the first time I have felt the need to join and post in a forum so forgive me if I post in the wrong areas or fail protocal.

You're right... it can be overwhelming! I'm sure if you ask specific questions you'll get great answers from this group! I would start by telling folks about the dimensions of the space you intend to setup in. That might narrow down a few options.! Also, Do you just want bang away on the range or compete in online tournaments... That kind of information will help narrow your search. Good Luck!

GC2 w TGC2019 if you can afford it and you don't have a lot of opposite handed people, Skytrak w TGC2019 if you can't afford it and Uneekor with TGC2019 if you need left and right handed access. That's what I recommend.

We should frame this advice and have it available for all new users to see at this period in time. Well done mthunt!

Skytrak game improvement package for sim play is only $100 annually not $300 as brettster said

Does the fact that i only have 9x9 screen area and can be 10ft tee to screen narrow my sim options?

I don’t know much on Uneekor and so someone may correct me, but for what MTHunt listed, I think they would all fit with your parameters. Uneekor does state 9’6” ceiling height, but I think there is a thread that says it can be less. Likely best to list all your dimensions. However, each of them suggested systems are camera based and so distance to the screen should be fine. 10 should be good so that you are far enough away for bounce back after the ball hits the screen. Thus, the only narrowing of your options will be ruling out radar based units, which are not included in the list suggested.

Seems like everyone has missed your obvious question landrynorth

So, I will ask you...what sort of experience are you looking for specifically, and what would you like your launch monitor to measure for you? Skytrak/GC2/ProTee/Flightscope...etc are called launch monitors aka hardware...that monitors/measures what your club/ball does.

Depending on what you want your launch monitor to measure: how far you hit the ball (carry distance), how fast your ball is going (ball speed), how fast you can swing a club (club head speed), backspin/side-spin, etc...will depend on what launch monitor you should choose.

For me, a few months ago I was in your boat. I was looking into not cheap junk but affordable. So, my first thoughts were a Skytrak. However, the Skytrak doesn't READ what your club head is doing when you hit the ball. For example; if you swing your club from outside to in / inside to out...it doesn't measure that. That sort of information is important to me, so I can fix my path/face and see what's going on besides relying on just the ball data only if I have a crooked swing and try to figure that out later. I didn't want to spend $10k on my first launch monitor. That's where my head started spinning like yours may be.

Hopefully I can break it down in a nutshell for you then.

First off, your screen size doesn't matter. You can get any hardware/launch-monitor that you want to (skytrak, uneekor, gc2, flightscope...etc) regardless of your screen size. You will just have to make sure that the projector you order can project the screen size from wherever you mount it. Also, if you have 10' from tee to screen...you have a lot more room than most of us, so relax. lol

Second, it depends on your budget as mentioned above for sure. If you are considering the Skytrak (nothing against Skytrak obv) I would guess you are trying to get the best bang for your buck on just getting into this and maybe keep something for the long-haul at the same time...?!? If you are, I was recently in the same boat and ended up going 'mid-affordable-market' yet supreme quality none-the-less with a ProTee launch monitor/sensor mat. The ProTee launch monitor measures everything that the Skytrak does, plus it reads and measures what your club does upon hitting the ball....club speed, club path, club angle...etc. To me that is just as extremely important as to what happens to the ball in the end because...well how can I know what happened to the ball if I can't see what happened to my swing?!? I'm all in with my Protee here used at $1,500 second hand. Couldn't be happier and their customer service is second to none...even though I didn't buy it from them with a warranty for $2,995. I guess I got lucky. (Not a spokesperson for them btw...lol)

Thirdly, you can pick up a Protee second hand less than a Skytrak. However, it does take some time to setup initially beyond a Skytrak. Once you're done with that though it's just off to hit at the driving range or play on TGC 2019 or whatever software you want to.

Fourth, if you'd like to go a step over the ProTee, correct me if I'm wrong other users, your next accurate option to measure BOTH ball and club data would be the Uneekor. It starts at $6k + tax from Michigan...without a store front...lol However, they have problems with having the perfectly 'marked balls' but it does actually measure ball spin; whereas the ProTee just calculates the spin seemingly very accurately...if you're worried about ball spin/axis etc. Next up, would be the GC2 with HMT (club-head data)....about $8-9kish used if it's not a scam. After that, the sky is the limit $. Just thinking you want things to be affordable for you but yet accurate...?!

Side notes from being on this forum for forever also with the Skytrak vs. ProTee vs other launch monitors. The Skytrak doesn't read short or high lofted chips hardly at all vs. the others.

Don't let your head spin, feel free to PM me if you have any ?'s and congrats on getting into this and joining the forum. Take a breath and pretty soon you'll be playing a round or 5.

            Here's a link to my recent setup if you're curious and where there's a will there's a way so get er done...;

Also, contact Jamie PROTEE UK if you are interested in the ProTee. I think I saw an entire ProTee setup on here for sale yesterday possibly....?!??

            Good luck
