How far does your 7yo hit a driver?

My son just turned 7 a couple of weeks ago, and like a light switch he went from being ho-hum about dad's passion to wanting to hit balls in the simulator every day (cue tear drop from corner of eye... I'm so proud!)

LOL Anyway, his USKids driver hits have gone from averaging 40-50 yards to 80+, and he's starting to regularly hit over 100. Pound for pound he crushes me lol, but I was idly curious if that seems good/bad/average for the age.

Kids grow at insanely different rates, so I don't think its really worth it to worry about what other kids are doing.

Just consider yourself lucky your kid has found the same passion as you! Just work on improving his game relative to himself not to others. I think it will be a healthier approach for both of you.

Great advice and I agree on all points! But honestly I'm not worrying in the slightest... it really is just a curious question. I have never pushed him (and never intend to start!) I'm just so stoked that he likes it! I'm also seriously impressed at how quickly he learns. At this rate he will surpass me in .... oops, I think like 5 minutes ago

Gnomike, 100+ yards for a 7yo is very impressive. My 9yo hits his USkids driver just over 100 yards. But he hits them very straight. Last fall, I went to through a slump. During one round, I had to play his ball on a couple of par 3s when I shanked my tee shots. I was so proud of him that I forgot to be embarrassed about myself; that is until one of my other playing partners reminded me. 😀

It's so cool/weird/cool how your kid's success takes center stage. I get more excited about his good shots, even as a beginner, than my own... every time!

My 9yr old hits it about 130-140 and my 7yr old hits it 90-100. 9yr old is 4'3" and weights 58lbs/ 7yr old is 3'11" and weighs 46lbs (they are 18 months apart). Just for perspective, not to brag. Every kid is different, there are 7yr olds hitting it further than my 9yr old at my local club.

I know what you mean... it just is what it is. I didn't start the thread to brag either, just out of curiosity. Plus, as we all know, the game is about hitting it in the cup.... which, truth be told... my son still seems completely oblivious to!!

Hi Gnomike,
I've had my son golfing on courses since he was 3 years old... i would tee him up from 100 yards and let him play in..... that way we weren't holding anyone up. He's been playing in USKids etc....tournaments since he was 7. He is now 14 and we've played in every major junior tournament across North America you can think of and then some. Best advice i can give you besides the usual let him have fun, is to encourage him to hit it as hard and as far as he can. It seems that is the way the coaching is now. They figure they can correct everything else later. It seems like he's off to a great start!! The way i have always looked at it from the start was my son learns and hopefully love golf as much as i do. What else can i do with my son when he's older and dad isn't so cool anymore to spend 4 hours with him and find out how his day went..... If you ever need any junior golf advice, don't hesitate to ask.

WOW! I'm very impressed with your success getting your son into golf! I did, or tried to do, the same as you when he was much younger, but it just never 'grabbed' him. I didn't push for exactly the reason you gave... I've got my evil plans to groom a playing partner for the future lol Having said that, I may PM you for USkids tournament advice.

gnomike congrats. One day he will hit it past by 40-50 yards and still be a teen. You will pull a 7 and he will pull an 8.

in addition to the advice above. Work on the short game. A lot of the juniors do like to bomb it but seem to give away strokes 100yards and in.

triplebogeysrbetter That's good advice! Right now all he wants to do is hit driver though. Off the tee. Off the deck. In the rough. In bunkers. I'm like dude, you have other clubs! Funny story, yesterday we were playing a course that is great for father son rounds because it has reg tees for me and realistic lengths for him. He kept getting mad at me, though, because on his par threes his driver was too much club. He actually gave me crap like it was my fault lol

A 7 year old hitting it around 100 yards would be average enough at local tournament level from what I have seen. Big hitters in that age group hit it around 150-170 yards.

My daughter was 140 yards when she was 7 years old. She was my oldest so at the time I didn't realize that she had real talent. My current 7 year old hits it about 20 yards lol

That's impressive! My son has some real talent for coordination, but none for listening, patience, staying positive.... lol probably too much like dad!
