  • Question about Opti Shot and mats

I am a SkyTrak user, but I have twin 4 year old grandsons that live next door to me, and they always want to "play golf" when they see grandpa hitting balls. I'm not too keen about them using the SkyTrak, and since one is right handed and the other left handed, I was thinking about purchasing an Opti Shot for them to use. I have purchased them some clubs a while ago for hitting into my net before I bought my SkyTrak, and was thinking an Opti Shot might be a low cost way to see if they are really into it, and they can practice without me worrying about them shanking balls into my SkyTrak. Also since one is left handed, I think the Opti Shot might be a lot easier as well. I have a few questions though...

    1. Is there a driving range with Opti Shot?

    2. Has anyone had young kids play on the Opti Shot? Do they find it enjoyable?

    3. Are there courses or forward tee boxes that might make playing a round more enjoyable to youngsters that do not hit it that far yet?

    4. The only mats I see designed for Opti Shot have the cutout on one side. Do they make one with the cutout in the middle (so both right and left handers can play) or do I just need to gat a mat and cut it out myself?

    5. I would probably start them out with foam balls, does it matter what type of foam ball you use?

    6. What is putting like with the Opti Shot? Does the ball type matter? (i.e. foam vs real) Do the courses allow gimmies like TGC does?

Lots of questions, I know, but thanks in advance for any information you Opti Shot users can provide!

I have an optishot that my kids (7) and (9) use quite a bit. They really enjoy playing on it in the winter. Here are the answers to your questions:

    1. Yes there is a driving range
    2. Yes
    3. You can select forward tees or par 3 tees for each course
    4. You can easily make your own stance mat with the optishot in the middle
    5. You can use no ball at all, foam balls, almost golf balls, or real balls
    6. My kids use almost golf balls to putt. You can set gimmies at any distance

If you're interested, I've got an Optishot 1 new in the box. $100 and it's yours. I bought it from amazon in December 2013. We moved shortly thereafter so it sat unopened. Fast forward 3 years later and I'm a happy protee user that keeps getting dirty looks from my wife every time she sees the optishot box. Good thing she has no idea what I spent on the simulator! Let me know if you're interested. It's a version 1 - I believe there's an upgrade path via the manufacturer but not sure if it matters with the littles.
