  • Just a general question. When using real ball. How long does a ball last before it cracks. For myself I get about a week out of it playing about 7 rounds of 18 holes a week.

Switch to foam ball and I'm lucky to get 18 holes before it starts to seperate. I had two balls that came with the system and played two rounds and both separated and cracked on me.

    • Are the balls very cold, or near freezing temperature? They will crack or split quite easily when I hit them when it is cold.

      • Yeah ive gone through a few this week due to freezing temperatures

        • I'm golfing in my heated basement. If anything it's warmer then in summer time.

Even summer time it's usually once a week with real ball. When I first got the optishot I used a prov1. Lasted 3 days.

          • Not really related to why a golf ball would crack, but when I was researching impact screens I came across a couple different forums that claimed if you use a damaged ball it increases the likelihood of your screen failing. The idea was that cuts, nicks or dings could cut the screen on impact, so I have been trying to use new or near new balls. Thankfully I have a pretty good connection at a private club that uses prov1's as range balls, so I can get them fairly cheap.

            • Do you tend to hit down hard onto the ball? I noticed some nicks in my almost golf balls but I have a pretty vertical swing.

              • I have a pretty steep swing as well. I usually only get 9 holes or so out of a ball in real life before I replace it.

                • So I'm to the point of frustration of throwing this optishot out if the reading I get with irons and sometimes the driver is off the charts. I'm getting readings of 10 degrees open or close I even manipulate the club and still get the same results.

Here is my setup. Have a lamp directly over the sensors roughly 8-10 inches above with enough clearance to swing club and not hit the lamp. Have a bulb that is forescent light. Have taped my clubs and and calibrated and re calibrated and even deleted the calibration and I'm still getting readings of 5-10 open or closed on almost every shot. I have unplugged the optishot and still get the same results. If I can't figure this out I might just quit playing.

Any other suggestions. I was so upset last night after playing john that I stayed up for another 2 hours trying to figure something out and still getting the same results. Even changed irons and still same results. I don't think I got any sleep last night because of thinking of trying different things.

I emailed optishot this morning. Hopefully they have some suggestions I can try. Or I could just have a faulty optishot.

It sounds like your unit may be faulty Jason. The only other thing I know to try is the sensor diagnostics. I'm not sure if that's exactly what it's called but you can find it under the start menu. It basically just test to see if all the sensors are reading properly. You run a club across it kind of like you do when you calibrate.

                    • I would suggest trying it without the directly over the sensors. Maybe move it up and away but on the sensor side. Do not have any lighting coming from behind you casting shadows of yourself onto the sensor. Do you have pictures of your setup, if so, please post and maybe some people can give you suggestions to optimize your lighting. That is the problem i have found with this system, it is very picky about lighting and shadows. FWIW, I've found that the p3 is not nearly this problematic. I have both and a skytrak.

I will have to look for this option. Didn't know anything about it. I have a optishot 1 but downloaded optishot 2

I did stream match last night and about 4 or 5 holes in I turned on camera. I had it facing the screen so hopefully my setup was showing.

                        • As vega says try the sensor test and that shoukd show up any problems

Also try removing ya turf from unit and again do the sensor test.

If your using a projector and screen when it's dark outside turn off all lights sort from projector and try the sensor test again

That way should be able to narrow it down to turf, lighting or sensor itself

                          How old is your unit?

                          Comment

                          • Yeah. The senor diagnostics is completely separate from the software where you play the game, you won't find it in there. I found it in the start menu under Optishot when I had to use it. As they also suggested, you may want to try just the dark room with only the light from the projector. I can't access twitch at work so I'm not able to see your setup right now. The concern is, that you weren't having these problems until recently.

                            • Before I downloaded optishot 2 I really didn't have these problems like I do now. i think I have always had the problems but msybe not to this degree. But since playing in tournsments and watching other guys play I have noticed the degree of the club wasn't off has much has my were. Before my driver was really bad. Was getting 15 degree closed or open but that was because of not using tape. But the driver is much more consistent But I noticed my irons are way off. I will take a half a swing with straight wrist so the club can not turn or twist and it will still read 10 degree open or closed.

I think the only reason why I score well sometimes is the fact I can get close enough with the drive to the green so I can use my 52 degree and even with the club face open or closed 10 degree I manage to get it close enough to make birdie.

I bought it in sept of 2013. I used it a few times in spring of 2014 but since this online started up I been using it a lot more.
