  • Thick Turf settings for Irons

    Hi all,

Following on from the driver tetsing it was universally agreed that the thick turf had little to no impact on Driver/3 wood swing speed or distance, hence the 100 88 setting

I received my Jagmanjoe Premier turf today, and can again confirm this is correct

However... its killing my irons distance. As Ive mentioned before I already have to have the distance % turned up to reflect real life as my deep reds play very long compared to other irons, but now even at those increased settings it dropped around 10 - 15 yards off most clubs

i think its basically lowering my swing speed reading for some reason, im guessing because of the increased height above sensors (35mm increase), which would make sense I suppose as for irons it expects club to pass directly over the top of the sensors, and with driver i guess it expects the ball teed up so doesn't require the club to be so close? i dunno

Anyway.... for those with the Thick Turf, using real ball (if anyone) do you find you have to increase your speed %, or do you just alter your distance %. My concern is im already up to 120% on my wedges (i hit my gap wedge 125 yards IRL) so I dont really want to increase that any further

In the paperwork that came with it, it said distances may be reduced and does gives some figures, but again says to alter distance % and dot really want to have clubs set at 130% distance etc

I'm thinking of just starting again, at stock 100 100, and going through them all again, was just looking for a bit of feedback if anyone else had this setup as to where I should be looking to make the increase, Speed % or Distance % (If it matters I have a very steep swing, hence the need for a thicker turf, my optishot on stock turf had taken a bit of punishment )

Any guidance would be greatly received

Been having a think about this and may well be that just need to modify the shaft length setting to reflect the decreased "shaft length" that the optishot sensors can see. Just a theory at the minute

Hey John! I am actually opposite. I have the 3/4 Inch thick Monster Tee Turf. For my irons I have my Speed at 100% and my Distance at 90%.

I am reducing my distance for my irons (just like my driver).

I don't blade them and hit down on the ball, but without reducing my distance I hit my irons longer than normal.
For example I have my 7 Iron set to average 150 in club settings and with my adjustment described above is how I achieve 150 yards with my 7 iron.

We are both completely opposite in needing to increase vs decrease iron distance. Not sure why.....lighting....sensor cutout size....one hits more steep.....

You may be hitting very very steep, not sure????

Just wanted to share because that means there is no cut and dry setting that works with every players irons with regards to turf thickness.

Yeah I think its all dependant on a players swing. I guess ill have to have a big range session and try to get things set back to how they were when on stock turf. You use a real ball i take it, and do you always hit of the spot when the tee goes all the way through (mine came with a wooden one in for guidance)

Ill have a look on one of your videos and see what your settings are like and see how they perform for me. Up to 4 degrees today so feels tropical compared to last night lol

had a nice covering of snow and ice here this morning, thnk ill have to invest in a more powerful heater, -1 just wasnt fun

Yeah, if you want to see my settings this video is more clear. Other videos are lower resolution.

I have a CFL bulb above on ceiling. I have nice big cut outs in the turf for the sensor. Better to be bigger than too narrow and restricting.

Yeah, I hit a real ball and hit from the same exact spot every time. My ball falls into a slight dimple where the tee would go, so the ball is for sure always perfectly set.

My settings may not work for you. Maybe you hit steeper or your lighting changes how the sensor react with speed...lots of variables that effect speed and distance.

Just one other thing. When you made your custom club set which one of the stock ones did you use as the one to copy, ie players, muscle back, game improvement etc

Doubt it makes any difference but just out of interest.

Yeah John it makes a difference which club type you choose when creating your club settings. I had problems when I selected Muscle Back.

I got better results when I created a club set using "GAME IMPROVEMENT". This made a big difference.

Then I researched my real off sets for my Titleist 712 AP2 irons. Then adjusted every club to the "Real Off Set".

Doing all this and taping my irons with white vinyl tape on the bottom made a world of difference.

Now all this should make a big difference, but every once in a while OptiShot will still give a bad reading. It could be lighting, maybe your stance didn't align perfectly parallel to the sensors. Just standing with your feet a little open or closed to the sensor will really change your swing.

It's not perfect all the time.

Wow didn't realise the different club sets made any difference. Think I'm on players as the one to edit.

I'll have a good run through on the range tomorrow and get irons back to my real workd distances. Don't have many problems with misreads normally, 3 wood and the occasional driver.

Pretty sure was down to the cold the other night, never had the putter misread so many times.

Now I'm on thick turf optishot is surrounded by foam in order to raise stance mat so that will help.

I'm also at 100% on swing speed and around 88-95 on distance for my irons. This gave me the best readings. I am using two overhead LED shoplights and so far they were the biggest improvement I have made and definitely the best investment thusfar!

Have you taped your irons too

Really don't want to tape them as still using them on the range/course

So far I have to say not enjoying the turf. Pretty much ruined my optishot experience, driver also no misreads more than ever, yardages all over the place, irons all over the place.

Think it's gonna be a struggle to get any rounds in on this tournament as unplayable at the moment.

Will have to try trimming up round the sensor holes to see if that helps but just seems that the increased distance away from the sensors decreases the swing speed readings. I dunno.

Will try and get it sorted by the weekend hopefully otherwise will have to go back to stock I guess

Hey John, I have to say that the thick turf is great for protecting the opti and giving.your.wrists a cushion but terrible for reading the speed. Since I switched to a thick turf, I lost about 20 mph on my Driver when.I tee it up. I also have to increase my irons from 12% to 5%. The only way that I can get a driver speed of 100 mph is if I hit.the ball with a tee just sticking out.if.the turf.or.off the deck.

That's exactly the rexukts im getting, driver speed if I tee it up max out at 92. When full out before could hit 114

Will have a play with tee height, and will have to give my irons even more boost than I already did when on stock turf. Weirdly also having to add a massive offset to my 3 wood which is strange.

As long as I can get clubs consistent im not worried but they're all over the place at the minute.

As I say in real life I do hit my low irons and wedges very long so had to boost them when on stock. Guess I'll just have to up them even more to compensate for the thick turf

I am not seeing any inaccuracies with the monster turf top. My driver speed is between 105-110, and is consistent with the simulator my local pro shop has. I did not tape any of my irons. I did research their specs from the manufacturer and input them into optishot. This really evened out my swing stats. I still feel that the biggest challenge to getting good reads is in the lighting, and I believe I've overcome that with the LED lights I posted about.

Hey guys, thanks for your help and advice with setting up my obs, twitch and webcam. Here is my first video. My tech savy friend helped me make my computer faster and optimized my configuration. Please let me know if It looks ok.
The audio is cut for some reason but it's a video of how my thick turf affects my swing speed and the further I hit away from the sensors (teed up) the slower it is. The first few hits are my driver teed up and I lose about 20 mph ! Then with the same settings, I hit my three wood off the turf ( which is where the original turf would be teed up) and I get about 98-104 mph. Which was what I got with the stock turf.
So one thing is for sure, the further my club is away from the sensors, the slower my clubhead speed is . It's about 10 to 15 % for my setup.
