  • Optishot 2

    Hi,
I just bought an optishot 2. Are there more golf simulator programs that I can use? or is it just optishot its official that will work?

To my knowledge, just the official optishot software.
    Lay-ups are for basketball!

Optishot is its own software. Other simulators like R-Motion and Tittle X use other companies software for the course play. R-Motion uses The Golf Club software and Tittle X uses E6. Optishot just has Optishot software. Hope this helps.

Can anyone here comment on the quality of the Optishot 2? is it worth the money? How accurate is it at distance measurement?

Honestly, it's a game. I started with an Optishot 2 and it scratched the itch at first. It just left a lot to be desired. Distance is way off and is up to whatever you input. Depending on the turf top, you adjust the boost to fit whatever you "think" you actually hit. If you can save a little more, get something else. Or if you just want basic simulation play without real accuracy, go for it. It was fun at first. I was just left with the desire to improve.

Optishot is extremely finicky. Some people are able to achieve a ballpark level of success in terms of accuracy. But it requires taping your clubs, having just the right kind of light and so forth. I began with one and it was pretty frustrating. I moved on after a couple months of constant tinkering and very little success. I imagine it could be fun if you can get the distances at least somewhat close and consistent. I think for every 1 person who is able to have some luck with it there are 10 who do not.

        This is great feedback. Thanks.

Throwing my two cents in: I have been unable to play golf for some time (years) due to a back injury, but used to be about a bogey golf player. Recent successful surgery has allowed me to be cleared to play again, so I wanted to get back in the mix, so using a low budget got a set of used clubs, an optishot2, a cheaper hitting mat and used the puzzle piece gym mats and my existing home theater screen, pc and added a home made swing groover instead of am impact screen and nets to get my home sim going. I tell you this to set the stage that my expectations were low, but I was committed.

At first I thought it was way off, so it took a few hours on the simulator driving range for me to see that the optishot (with CFL lights that I added) would read my clubs / swing pretty well. I "tuned" the distances and speed slightly for my in game clubset based on what I see at the actual driving range for distances and made a "juiced" set of clubs to let others who just want to have fun with it feel good playing.

My friends, family and I end up playing late into the night and find it great fun. When I am alone and using it to practice and improve my game, it's ability to read my swing (outside in, inside out, on plane) the ball strike position (center, toe, heel, etc.) and the open or closed club face data has been accurate with the shorter clubs (slower swing). A calibration of my longer clubs and it has been accurate enough for me to practice and improve my swing as I get back into golfing shape.

I am already enjoying it so much that I am planning on getting a more sophisticated and permanent setup, but got more than my money's worth out of it in the first two weeks alone.

When I hit a fat shot or really crank up the swing speed with the woods is when the accuracy falls shortest for me. If I take a regular swing, concentrating on my mechanics and striking I can play full rounds without any reads I would say just weren't my swing being crappy, but a total misread. I take a mulligan and move on. Even the putting is working OK for me.

Now I think that isn't going to translate to the course as well as the swing practice I am getting, so I practice putting more off the Optishot and use a gimme distance in the software. I can read and make puts with it, and my Uncle is very good at matching his puts to the distances and reads in the software.

If your not a teen or lower handicap I think it is a great tool, not just a fun toy. If I get to that level of handicap I will let you know if I still thinks it's accurate enough.

            So heres my .02 cents,
I created a full sim in garage with the hopes that optishot would scratch the itch during winter, however it never came close. I tried it all taped clubs different lighting multiple club calibration. In the end I gave up after 20-30 uses. It is at best a “game” with potential to injure if you like to take a divot. The optishot ended up on the shelf of old electronics in a corner of the garage.

Fast forward 3 years and I bought a skytrak and have never been happier and wish I would have bought it years earlier.
Dont waste your money find a new/used skytrak you will not regret it.

I'll throw in my 2 cents as well.

I think it's a great 'game' - it also provides vital statistics on your swing, swing path, speed, tempo etc. There are glitches with the game but you get what you pay for.

You can follow my experience on Optishot with reviews on ease of set up and accuracy of distance on my YouTube channel here; https://www.youtube.com/terriblegolf

I have compared all the budget simulators and the Skytrak...if you can afford the Skytrak then by all means buy the Skytrak. If you are looking for a good budget simulator that is easy to use and you can get vital stats for your swing then the Optishot 2 is the choice. I have done ton of comparison videos of the budget sims and Skytrak if that helps: www.youtube.com/c/deangolfallyear
