The current batch of 4k projectors would be wasted on a golf simulator. They are designed for darkened home theaters primarily. Within a year, I would expect a new quasi-4k DLP chip from TI to be incorporated by some of the lower cost projector makers that may be more suitable (high lumens) for golf simulators. Perhaps getting the price to under $5k.
Personally, I think these would be wasted on a typical home simulator - not sure if screen material is even smooth enough to benefit higher resolutions.
Funny, we were just talking about this, and i would have to agree on whether there is material good enough to be able to withstand a ball that can also show the detail of a 4k projector.
Absolutely an issue. That said, with larger projection sizes (e.g. 16' x 9'), I'm pretty sure that the difference would be very noticeable. Regrettably, we are at least 2-3 years away from the point where a 4K projector bright enough for our philosophy of use comes down from early adopter pricing.
