  • New Skill Assessment on SkyTrak

The new Skill Assessment seems to be a great idea. But I guess like most of the skytrak updates this was also a half baked idea.
First the good points: The SA idea is a great game improvement tool and the final reports are very colorful and detailed.

I have used it for 3 days in a row and here are my two bits on the same.

    Yardage:
Mine was somehow marked in meters and I could not change it to yards during the session. Only after the session I could change it.

    Wind Direction:
It allows wind adjustment if one wants to make it closer to reality i.e., (North, NE, South etc). But in relation to the unit, how should one adjust?. It should be on the interface itself so that i could do the adjustment.

    Distance numbers:
The Carry plus roll does not add up. This isn't the issue when I am not using the new Skill Assessment tab and only using the Practice Driving range Practice.

    The Average Distance:
The final AVERAGE of say the 10 shots of the driver was 250 yards. There is also a top line which says TARGET 1: 240.5 yards/ CLUB Driver. These two numbers are not same ? Moreover the average of my driver was 250 yards however all the shots were less than 242 yards.

    The Dynamic Handicap
This is really a beta. I don't know why this version was released. This is really a half baked idea. I feel a basic algorithm would have done a better job. But for me this was a major draw as one can track one's performance by tracking this number for every new session. I play to a 11 handicap but my Dynamic handicap was 20 !!!

Re: Dynamic handicap - expecting it to match your real handicap is um... ridiculous. It's a relative measure, next time out you try and beat 20. It's definitely a hard grader which I like. We all need a good ego check once in awhile.

Did anything change in the skills assessment? I thought it was the same as before.

don't think so. I took new to mean, relatively new, not necessarily most recent update new.

Deepak I'm curious if you're new to the SA?

I've used it for a while now to work on my game inside of 100yds. I set targets from 10/20/30yds up to 100yds. It's by far the best practice i've had. The export at the end really lets you understand your weak points and tendencies.

I cannot speak to the issues about cary+roll though I guess I haven't paid that much attention to it. I think the idea is getting it as close as possible to the target.

As far as distance measurement goes you need to set that before you even enter the skill assessment or practice range by clicking on the tab in the top right.

In the skills assessment if you want to adjust wind and so on you'll actually have to click the "X" in the top right of the setup screen where you can choose yardages/clubs/how many balls per shot. From there you can access the tab that gives you the ability to add wind/humidity/alt/temp. After that you click on the cog wheel on the left side of the screen at the bottom of the yardage panel and you can continue setting up your skills assessment from there.

The point of the dynamic handicap is to go through your bag and hit each club to whatever distance. It will give you a handicap for each target/club and an overall. You can then see what part of your game you need to work on and track your progress as you work on those clubs. Someone could be a 25 handicap with their driver but a 2 handicap with the wedges..and have an overall closer to 10

Maybe this exists already, but I'm not sure. It would be nice if there was a guest mode that basically didn't save any shot data to make it cleaner to go back through your history looking for statistics over time. I find the skills assessment very helpful for seeing what I need to work on. It usually is a lot different than what I think I need to work on. I know putting is really challenging on the skytrak, but having a better putting practice mode would be awesome. I'm a software engineer by trade and have often thought about reaching out to Skytrak to see if they have an API that I could develop a mini-golf game for, or a putting challenge app.

Can the multiple shape & size greens (from the practice driving range mode) be used in Skills Assessment & Challenge modes? Closest to pin seems like it would get old and boring just hitting to at the center of a large circular target every time. In real life greens aren't perfect circles and the pins aren't right smack in the center of them. Just curious
