Tomahawk Tees

I have read in various threads here where a lot of people recommend the Tomahawk Tees for use with a mat/simulator, and honestly, I "poo-pooed" their recommendation. My thought was, a tee is a tee. I purchased one of those "Martin Hall 5 Star golf mats" that advertises you can use real tees on. That's true, but there are limitations. So I have used the rubber mat tees (which I have cut down for my preferred driver, 3 & 5 woods, and irons height), brush tees, and regular wooden tees which I also have to cut down to get to my desired heights. (and then I break a wooden tee...pain in the butt!)

I finally decided to try these Tomahawk tees and ordered a couple packs. My first thought when I tried them was "Damn, what kind of idiot am I for not listening to the people on this forum!" I believe these tees are the ABSOLUTE best for hitting off of a mat! For me, the tall tees are the perfect height (Some people have recommended stacking them if you want it higher), and the small tees (with the wider part on the mat) are perfect for my fairway woods, and if you flip them upside down, they are (for me) at the perfect height for iron shots!

I pretty much was using brush tees, but sometimes (if you are constantly teeing it up in the same area) I noticed the would fall over and I would have to brush the turf with my hand to get the tee to stay up. Not with these Tomahawk tees!! They are very stable, and the best benefit to me is the fact that not one has flown through my net! The only thing I think some people may not like, is of you put the tee exactly on the SkyTrak laser, they tend to "glow". Some people may find this distracting, but I think it looks kinda cool!

So to those that have recommended these tees, and I didn't listen to you, I bow to your wisdom! For those of you looking for a great tee to use with you mat, GET THESE TEES! You won't be sorry!

I've actually started using them out in the real world as well. Practice what you play with right?

According to the USGA Rules, I don't see why they wouldn't be legal.

1. Tees (Rule 11)
A tee is a device designed to raise the ball off the ground A tee must not:
• be longer than 4 inches (101 6 mm);
• be designed or manufactured in such a way that it could indicate line of
play;
• unduly influence the movement of the ball; or
• otherwise assist the player in making a stroke or in his play

jrz, am wondering about IRL tournament play. N54TT seems to think they might be legal for use in tournament play?

Yes, I do use them in real life as well as on the sim. They do state on the box that they conform with golf regulations.

I tried the tomohawk tees and found them to be very good and yes them glowing is pretty cool but I became annoyed with the tall tee falling over all the time. It could have been due to my true strike mat. I tried the birtee tees and they are a lot wider in the base and they come in 8 sizes so you can find the perfect ball height.

Wow, I haven't had one instance of the tall tee falling over. However, I can see that after many uses, the material may weaken after being hit with a club time and time again, which may cause it to weaken, and if that happens, I'll just use a new tee! I'll have to check out those birdie tees you mentioned.

Mine fall over all of the time, but it's because my matt is plush enough that the piling is affected by striking it in the same spot over and over again. Overall I have found them to be better than traditional wooden tees and the claw grip thing, though.

I use the aero spark neo tee since they're taller. But, yeh...ive been using the same tee for the last two years out on the course....love them and obviously very durable. They're what I practice with and tee the same height every time. I have a shorter one too for the rare situations where I might want to tee it lower.

I have the tomahawk tees but didn't like the tees for fairway woods and irons. I saw a picture of boo radleys setup with birtees and bought a pack to try them out. Birtees appear to be higher quality and come with 7 different tee heights. The diameter is larger make the tee stand up much easier it never falls over. I am very happy with my neo tomahawk tees but after buying a pack of birtees I won't go back to tomahawk tees. http://birtee.com/en/

edit: I don't have a skytrak so I am not sure how they work with skytrak.

I have used the tomahawk for a very long time and just got a pack of the aero spark. Aero spark is taller and wider, I like these more. I had to cut it down some because it was too tall. Any of these paired with the tee claw and it's the best thing since sliced bread!

I second the Aero Sparks! These golf tees are amazing and hold up really well. The Tomahawk tees seemed to breakdown faster and fall apart.

...but none of them are anything special without the love for the clawtee missing itt

For indoor use, I bought a foot of 3/4" heater hose and cut it to a length I like. Its indestructible and cheap.

Mike Z, I am intrigued by your comment. Any chance you could post a picture or 2 of this heater hose you speak of? If not, could you try to expand on what exactly this hose looks like, is made of, where it can be found at a Home Depot or hardware store, etc. Thanks.

Seems like a thin garden hose would work as well.

Home depot sells it by the foot and most hardware stores will sell it by the foot. Should be about $2 per foot. This link will show you what it looks like. The most important thing to pay attention to is that near the end of a spool the hose is really curved. If you find that I'd go to a different store and get something from the first half of the spool.

What DeadStick posted is the right idea, but I wouldn't pay that much.

Just got the birtees. Having a hard time avoiding non reads. And that includes pinning them back with a string to prevent them from jumping forward and interfering with the skytrak sensor. Any tips?

I use those aero tees, they are great. The design for cutting to desired length is a brilliant idea.

Are you using the "white" birtees? If so that might be the problem. I can't remember where I read t but I thought skytrak said to use another color.

i have had the aero / tomahawk tees and I have had the birtees. I like birtees better, especially the smaller tees for irons and fairway woods when teeing up.

Yes. I'm using the white ones. I didn't think about specifying otherwise, as I thought it'd be easier to tie them down so far. I'll probably need to get fishing line and tie it to a movable weight. Hopefully won't have to buy more. Thanks.

I've been using the dark blue BirTees and haven't noticed any additional mis-reads due to it. Definitely try a different color.
I recommend getting some of those Tee Claws to anchor them down to your mat.
