  • UK based SkyTrak/TGC Users + Newbie questions

    Hi all.

New to this fantastic forum and Skytrak/TGC. The forum and the community around TGC highlights everything great about the internet and decent human beings!

Are there any UK based TGC users? Keen to find some same time zone buddies!

I bought a 6month old Skytrak, which seems to be great. The plastic lens cover does a some light scratches that often appear on that shiny type of plastic - will they cause problems? Any way to replace to lens?

The TCG tour that is available for play - is that against both Skytrak and GC2 users? Any more launch monitors play on the same tour?

I am UK based, although I dont have my mancave built yet so I have only used my Skytrak on a driving range.
I have TGC and will be fully in to it when the cave is done.

Great - will have to add as a friend or buddy or what ever it is!

One more question - TGC - what are "pro tee" versions of the courses?

You can play TGC with protee, ST, GC2, GSA and ES16. Protee versions are designed more for sim use vs console play.

So the same tour has all sorts of monitors as input - impressive! There can' be huge differences in the accuracy of the data input from each if we are all competing in the same field!

Thanks regarding the protee courses. Are all the courses cross platform then? Ie I could play the same course version on XBOX,PS4 and PC and SIM?

I'm also UK based - Manchester specifically. Yes, you can design a course on either xbox, ps4 or PC and then play it on your console or simulator. The catch is, if you publish on those platforms you have to wait for a "course sync". ProTee United run these every now and then - not sure when the next one is scheduled for. If you want to be able to play it on the simulator straight away, you have to publish it via the simulator version.

While I think of it - one warning too: you will find that a lot of the console based courses are crazy tough for real life golfers. 250yd carries over water to island greens, that kind of thing. Anything which has ProTee in the title will have been designed to be played by the sim crowd with real clubs. There is a thread on here which lists the top "Real Course Recreations" - people pretty much agree that the guys that have designed these have done a top notch job of reproducing the layouts, green slopes, etc of the real courses. Clearly not all these will be real life golfer friendly, but then neither are the real courses ;o)

Thanks. I can see Protee are heavily involved in things, where do they fit into the puzzle? Do they own any part of things?

250 yard carry to island greens - sounds fun

UK based also, Just starting to build my practice area and trying to convince myself SkyTrak is the way to go.

Any advice on mats, nets and impact net plus any reviews or feedback about suppliers you have used greatly appreciated. also any thoughts on Skytrak appreciated. Would love GC2 but just cannot justify the cost :-)

                Cheers

Mat-wise, I use the TrueStrike, got it from golfswingsystems.co.uk. It is expensive, but it really is very, very good. I have it configured with the gel section far right (for a righty) so the skytrak can sit on the floor next to it. I use Tomahawk tees attached to a tee claw to stop them flying about the place. You can google for them - think the tomahawks were from amazon from memory, and the tee claw was from some special import place (they were both only a few quid though I think).

I put together a custom frame with stuff mostly from Metals4U.co.uk, their cut-to-size-for-free service is really good for uprights and cross bars. I used 26.9mm, but if I was doing it again I'd go with the 34mm as i was spanning around 14ft and I ended up with a slight sag in the middle. I would also measure it a little more closely at the exact height I was going to hang if from ;o)

My backing net and top panel (and the sides which I don't use) come from sportnetting.co.uk. I have the high impact netting, bought it slightly small so it is stretched tight - feels like it would stop a charging bull. I think it is pretty fairly priced.

I have bought 2 different screens so far, but I've hung one. I have the double sided screen from Protee. It's "ok" - picture is great, longevity is not brilliant. I put a hole in the first side after only about 4 months. That said, I was using ProV1 balls, which tend to cut up a little if you use full wedges - so the fault is defo partially mine. The new one is more like archery netting, it's the stuff Callaway use in the booths in their UK offices. Once I punch through the other side of this net I'm going to hang it up - then I'll be able to give a review on that. Expectation is picture not great, longevity brilliant.

For the money, I've been very impressed with Skytrak so far. Tested it at an outdoor range. The ball flight replication is uncanny, the carry distances are pretty good. The roll out and therefore total distance is a little more than you would expect in the UK - unless its summer time links. For example I was carrying my 7 iron at the range with range balls 165ish which is pretty close to what I would do on the course, though it records 15 yard roll out and total distance of 180 which is a down wind pured one for me. The launch/spin measurements seem sound too, though I'm no expert on them.

In terms of what the kit does when hitting into a net - next level stuff. Worth every penny if you can only practise into a net. Being able to get this level of feedback on the 50/60/70/80/90 etc etc shots is golden.

I can't wait to take a reasonable reflection of my ball flight around some of the sim courses on TGC, and play in the tours etc.

As the kit get more expensive they are no doubt better - I picked up a 6month old Skytrak for £1300 from ebay - at that price range I don't think it can be beaten.

                  Thanks guys for the replies

i was looking at a mat and screen from golfswingsystems but not the truestrike, I have set a limit of around 250gbp for the mat as I have a load of other stuff to get as well.

snoozeulooz - How does the mat feel, is it very firm or is there a bit of give. A bit concerned about wrist injury from long term use.

ste1010 The mat has a nice bit of give in it. One of the reasons that I chose this mat is that when the hitting area wheres out you can purchase that particular section and not the whole mat. They also do different types of grass so you can spec it as you wish as far as i know.

I'm UK based GC2 and SkyTrak user on TGC and JNPG tours. (I'm also a reseller for SkyTrak and archery impact screen plus other sim components).
You'll love TGC and definitely get involved with the tour!
