  • Trackman vs SkyTrak - New Comparison

    Here we go...

I've been a pretty big advocate for SkyTrak's accuracy on distance if you know your numbers. I was on Trackman last night for a fitting for new irons, but we did a baseline test with my current 7 iron in before moving on to the new clubs I was testing. 7 iron test for SkyTrack was over the Christmas holiday. SkyTrak over multiple shots is very very accurate.

712 Titleist CB 7 iron - 10 shots per system

    Trackman - LA 19.2 Spin 7449 Ball Speed 126 Carry 175 Total Yards 179
    StyTrak - LA 18.9 Spin 7811 Ball Speed 127 Carry 174 Total Yards 181

Having trouble reading the details on the Trackman screenshot... how did sidespin and offline numbers compare?

It wasn't on the same day - it was more of a distance, LA, backspin comparison. I didn't want to take the ST during the fitting it would have been too distracting.

looks pretty good averages. Unless i'm mistaken though, are you saying the two sets of data were taken at different times? i.e its not a direct shot to shot comparison?

Yes, it was different days. I didn't want to mess around with the SkyTrak during my fitting and get distracted. It was 10 vs 10 shots total on average comparison. I strike it consistently and don't use my SkyTrack for sim golf, so it was for reassurance that in a 5 shot average, distances are correct.

I go back to Miles of Golf when my irons comes in for gap testing...I'll do a head to head at that point in about 2 weeks if it works.

Good stuff. Will be interesting to see how the spin axis measurements compare.

I've got videos of golf pro's hitting same ball being read by TRackman and SkyTrak ... so perfect comparison as such. I'll upload to YouTube and post links here.

It's amazing that there isn't one LIVE video on the internet comparing a Trackman to the SkyTrak. They are nowhere to be found. I don't play golf for a living, but a low cap. I will have mine on video as well.

I've never felt the GC2 and SkyTrak comparisons on the same ball is very true. Angularly since both systems are beside the ball and need that real estate, it throws off alignment.

I also found it VERY interesting that the Club head speed ended exactly the same with ST calculations (average of course)

It's a tough comparison but I may give it a whirl. I have a place nearby that you can hit from a mat out onto the range with trackman. The issues I see, is first, you'd have to use trackman in normalize mode if you want to compare ball flight if there is any kind of wind outside. Then when you do that, you're really comparing ball flight algorithms. Though it would be useful to compare the raw ball data from impact. I might give it a whirl and get a few comparisons on video this weekend.

right, this is what I would be doing. Miles of Golf has a fitting center where you hit out of a garage window basically

yup, same deal at a local range by me.

One other consideration. It's been a minute since I've used trackman, but I believe when you put it in normalize, their is a setting that lets you hit range balls, and it extrapolates the data as if you'd hit a premium ball. Would want to make sure that is off as well if possible.

Yep, normalization on, range comparison off, is what people should use. That'll be the closest comparison, unless the weather during your test happens to be 75* sunny day with zero wind at sea level, then you can turn normalization off too.

That's what this comparison was - at home it was premium ball and they did the Trackman normalization for premium ball during my fitting. My fitting was set to my 500 ft elevation too as that's where I play. Nominal difference from sea level. I had the ST set at 500 ft too.

Well, if those were in fact taken on different days, then I think we've found a replacement for our robot testing

Ok, we hit a snag with the Live video SkyTrack vs Trackman testing last night. I went to pick up my new clubs last night and to do a gap test on Trackman. Problem was it was 30* in southern ohio, snowing and we had a 30 mph headwind into the hitting bay last night. While Trackman normalizes 80F and no wind, the SkyTrak does not obviously. Even though ST only measures the first few feet, I didn't feel it was worth it hitting cold balls into that much wind. I didn't feel like wasting 15+ premium golf balls to get data that wasn't in a controlled environment. And I don't want the Trackman to be in normalization mode either. To be continued...in a few weeks.
