  • SkyTrak Connection Drop

Hi all, I'm trying to gather more detailed information on the connection drop some users are reporting in order to provide to the hardware team. If you can answer the following questions:

    1) Are you PC or iPad?
    2) USB, Direct Mode, or Network Mode?
    3) Do you see connection drops in SkyTrak app, sim partner, or both?
    4) Are you updated to v2.5.4 software and 1.55 firmware?
    5) Have you done a hard reset of your SkyTrak unit since the update?
    6) If your battery is fully charged, do you still experience the drop?
    7) If the connection drops while using network mode, have you forgotten all other networks so the device doesn't switch in the background?
    8) Are you using a protective case? If so, which one?

I'm most recently interested in #6.

Hi, I don't think I have it as bad as others, as mine drops maybe twice an hour.
    1. ipad
    2. network mode
    3. skytrak app only, I don't use sim
    4. yes, both up to date
    5. I haven't tried a hard reset as it's not that bad a problem for me
    6. my battery never shows fully charged, only about 80-90% max

Actually, thanks - I need to add another one about network mode. See #7. And please try resetting your unit. You will need to put it back in network mode again after.

    3) never have any issues in the Skytrak app, however on the skytrak TGC interface more often than not i have to click connect box multiple time before it will find the skytrak. my skytrak connectivity light is solid amber before i attempt to connect box in TGC.
    4) Yes both.
    5) no, unless turning it off does a hard reset.
    6) only on the TGC interface.
    7) only have one wifi network

Hard reset is holding a paperclip in the small hole in the bottom for about 10 seconds - you'll see all lights go yellow/yellow/yellow

    1) iPad
    2) Network Mode
    3) I am only using Skytrak app at this point
    4) Yes both
    5) no, but will try that tonight
    6) always fully charged, I actually keep my plugged in, is that bad???
    7) I only have one 2.4 network so that isn't an issue for me.

One thing I noticed is that it seems to freeze after I have hit with several different clubs. It seems fine tracking one club but when I switch to another one within a few swings it seems to start freezing...maybe coincidental but I thought I would mention it.

          1) PC
          2) USB and Network mode (drops more frequently in Network mode)
          3) Drops in both SkyTrak app and sim partner
          4) Yes
          5) Yes
          6) Yes
          7) Yes
          8) I have used both the SkyTrak and the Armour case

Note that I have used USB mode almost exclusively for the past 6 months or so. If I use Network mode, it loses connection too often.

I've also added #8 that has to do with the protective case. It could potentially interfere with Wi-Fi and this will be a great place to track that.

Thanks for looking into this, Seth!

                        1) PC, Windows 7 Pro.
                        2) Direct Mode.
                        3) I mostly use TGC, and usually have one connection drop per round. Some rounds, without reason, multiple drops. The times I've used the SkyTrak PC software, I don't think I've ever had a drop.
                        4) No, no. Afraid doing so will mess up something else.
                        5) N/A.
                        6) I need to follow this more closely, but think I've experienced drops even with the unit plugged in and charging.
                        7) N/A (and as a precaution, all other wireless networks have been forgotten).
                        8) FMJ, but will note that I had connection drops prior to installing the SkyTrak into that case, and that the case does not seem to have increased the frequency of drops.

Thanks again, Seth - good luck!

                        UPDATE

So I had a few connection issues tonight. Nice timing on your post! It started early on in my first TGC round. I was able to reconnect after disconnecting and then reconnecting my SkyTrak in Windows Network Connections. The SkyTrak and TGC worked fine for the rest of the round.

Then I played a second course. Again, my SkyTrak dropped the connection early on. Hitting "Connect Box" in the ProTee interface didn't work after multiple attempts, so I disconnected the unit in Windows Network Connections. Attempting a reconnect brought up an error message: "Windows was unable to connect to SkyTrak_[serial number]." I then rebooted the SkyTrak, decided to try plugging it in, was able to connect it via Windows Network Connections, but was unable to get my SkyTrak to connect in the ProTee interface. So I repeated the reboot procedure and was finally able to connect the SkyTrak to both Windows and the ProTee interface. At no point, however, did I have to exit TGC.

Usually it isn't this bad. I'll drop a connection at some point in the game and can generally just hit "Connect Box" in the ProTee interface and by the second attempt of hitting that button everything is working fine. Hope this information is useful, and that I'm remembering everything correctly!

Thanks again, Seth, and good luck!

I just finished two rounds on two different courses tonight and didn't have a single connection drop. Something really interesting I've noticed is sometimes when I turn on my SkyTrak and it connects to my computer, my Logitech M325 wireless USB (2.4 GHz) mouse becomes very sporadic in its operation. I usually have problems with my SkyTrak disconnecting on these nights, as well. Tonight, my wireless mouse, keyboard, and SkyTrak all functioned flawlessly without dropping connections or becoming non-responsive. Just wanted to add this to my thread if it's of any further help. Thanks again, and Happy Easter!
