  • SkyTrak Newbie question--Distances jacked up?

I have used my ST for a couple weeks now. I have a good turf mat and a white impact screen. The screen is about 9-10 feet from the ST. I am using a Pro V1x--same one I use on course.

My iron is usually a stock 145-150 club. The SkyTrak is getting my ball flight right--but the ball is landing at 150 and rolling out to 160 or so.

Is there something missing in my setup or am I developing the simulator swing? I bought a divot action mat---same result.

Ummmmm..... sounds like the Skytrak is working perfectly.

titleistwhore, it sounds like he's getting 10-15 yards more than he's used to outdoors. dmoore9003 you could mess with the altitude/humidity adjustments to get a more accurate reading. I live in Colorado so I've done this and it takes some tweaking but it helps. Also, no mat you hit off will replicate real grass so your extra distance may be coming from mat hitting as well.

He says he hits the club 150 outdoors and skytrak is saying that it is carrying 150. Its probably an 8 or 9 iron. I don't know about you but I don't factor roll into my iron distances. The skytrak is reading just fine.

Thanks. Are the settings easily changed?

Super easy. Just hit the little menu in the top right of the screen and go to session settings. You can change all kinds of stuff there. Altitude, humidity, temp, etc.

Thanks. Does it "keep" or revert back to a default setting every new session?

            It saves your settings.

It sounds like the spin might be low? Are you getting "normal" type spin numbers? If it's outputting like 4000 RPM for an 8 iron I can see that leading to a few more yards carry and a lot more roll

At the risk of stating the obvious... are you hitting into practice greens with the skytrak or just on the range? Obviously range is going to roll more - as I'm assuming you're used to hitting irons into greens IRL.

8 iron spin is 5500 or so. I have been just using the range. I switched to the GIP & greens tonight---much much closer to reality.

Any tips on how to align to the SkyTrak? I have the Armour case. Should I use an alignment rod and hit down that line. Unless I open the face and aim right--I go 10-15 yards left of target. My real life play is a slight draw---but more like 3-6 yards left.

I like to put down a piece of blue painters tape on the floor between the mat and the screen, right on the target line, then align the ST range centerline to that line by adjusting the projector (or using ST centerline offset). Then, hit little straight chips and watch where they hit the centerline on the screen, and adjust the ST unit alignment until ST says Center shot when your ball hits center line.

Carry is really what is important to watch. Total distance will vary depending on wind, green speed, green and fairway firmness. Carry is your constant.

That spin is on the low side for an 8 iron is probably a big reason it's calculating that extra carry and roll. I had the same issue where i was hitting farther and rolling farther due to low spin. I thought there was an issue with my machine since I don't get that much roll on the course. But last weekend, I went to PGA superstore and hit their simulator with the same model of irons I use. I was getting pretty much the same spin numbers as the skytrak. Guess it's true people can change their swings due to the mats, indoors, etc. My personal theory is we try to hit it further when we see numbers so our swing starts to change. my two cents

You may also want to check the ground condition setting. It seems like the last few times I have updated the APP the default has been to firm conditions. The firm conditions setting shows unrealistic roll out IMO.

It's all spin related. With my practice clubs if I don't clean them for a week or 2 the grooves fill up with residue from the ball and I fly long... After cleaning I get too much spin and my distances read low...
