I am a heavy user of SkyTrak, and typically hit more than 200 balls per day off an indoor mat. From time to time, my wrists hurt from thin and fat shots. I decide It is time to invest in a golf hitting mat. Ideally this mat shall feel like real grass and reduce wrist and elbow impact. Any recommendations?

Does anyone have experience with Ultimate Matzilla Golf Mat? The picture looks good..... http://www.allturfmats.com/Ultimate-...-Turf-s/38.htm

I have one of those mats. If you are looking for mat to reduce wrist injury I would not go this route. On fat shots the club really gets slowed down. The leading edge digs in, and can put some stress on your wrists. On a normal driving range mat you can hit behind the ball 2in, and get a reasonable result. If you fat the ball with this mat you know it right away. I'm not saying this is a good or bad thing, but its def not the best for your wrists.
The positive of this mat is it is very durable. I have had it for 5 years. It sat outside for 2 summers, and has been inside for the last 3 years. I use it quite a bit, and you couldn't tell it wasn't in new condition.

You can't go wrong with a truestrike mat. Yes it's expensive but well worth the money as I've had no problems with my wrists. Or you could make a similar one to it as there are a couple of different threads on this site with instructions.

I have a CC Elite mat, purchased from Costco. It's a heavy, high-quality mat, but is not forgiving of fat shots. If you pick the ball cleanly, no problem, but your club will slow considerably if you hit in front of the ball and strike the mat before the ball. I have not found that to lead to any particular discomfort, and it certainly provides plenty of feedback which is helpful to me as a beginner. The mat accepts Claw Tees readily, and I use it with TGC as well as with the ST application.

I started with CC Elite mat, but it started hurting my wrist as it is less forgiving than grass, and hurt my simulation scores for the same reason (even slightly fat shots are more penalized than grass). Truestrike is more forgiving on both fronts, but also pricier, and slightly less easy to use with Skytrak (have to elevate more).

I've done 2 DIY versions which has worked well for me. Pain free and a lot cheaper than the premium mats.
My first attempt, I bought a 3x5 mat off All Turf Mats (through amazon but same mat).
The bottom layer was insulation board (https://www.google.com/shopping/prod...dYgaAiyG8P8HAQ)
Middle layer was from interlocking foam tile pads from costco and cut out an insert to fit a gel pad like this (http://www.ebay.com/itm/ULTRAGEL-Mot...-/221046023570)
Glued those layers together and put all turfs mat on top. The mat does move a little bit so I used some adhesive velcro in the corner regions to prevent slippage.
If you plan to move the mat around a lot I would use the insulation board as a bottom. If you don't plan on moving it around I would just do the foam layer underneath.
My second DIY, I made it 5x5 so I can rotate the mat four times before I need to buy a new one and didn't have to adjust my stance with the driver.Last edited by Jtangm04; 06-07-2017, 08:26 PM.My courses:

What 5x5 mat did you buy? I'm looking to do this. I made a smaller hitting section next to the stance mat with the gel, but i want to only have one piece now.

Thanks for the info. Does it have the hole for the rubber tee on all four sides? Hopefully not.

Here is my pro-tip for finding a good mat and cheap. If there is a good driving range or ranges in your area, go test out their mats. If you find one you like ask the owner if they are willing to sell any used mats. The good top end ranges usually change these out every season or two and most of the wear is minimal
