  • loft wedge woes

So, the other day I was trying to play in one of the *** combines. For those of you who aren't familiar, the combines are a series of web based sim tournaments focused on specific parts of the game. The one I was attempting to compete in required you to shoot at the pin from 60, 70, 80 and 90 yards away. All of which I use a loft wedge. And just a 60*, not one of those super lofted 62 or 64* wedges. I found it so incredibly difficult to get the ST to give me anything but a no read. Shot after shot. Probably 7 out of 10 shots were no reads. I tried moving the ball an inch in front of the red dot as some users have recommended. I tried 2" in front of the laser dot. I even tried adjusting the feet on the protective metal case to elevate the ST above the hitting surface. Nothing really worked with any consistency. Hitting a flop shot simply doesn't work with the ST. Not in my experience at least. I will note that when taking full swings, the no reads were minimal. Maybe 2 out of 10. I really hope this is something that ST is working on. Though I'm not sure what can really be done without overhauling the hardware(I'm guessing it has something to do with the cameras limited field of view)

For the most part my Skytrak doesn't miss shots. When it does occasionally miss it is one of my friends who his his 60 degree really high. We've found that if he moves the ball behind the red dot (away from the screen) that it will read almost every time. When he puts the ball on the dot it will misread. Let me know if that works for you.

You're not going to like this comment, but I had a friend hit a crazy flop the other day and it picked it up... it registered at 54* I didn't even't think they advertise it reading that high, but it picked it up. He hits everything crazy high, but it doesn't struggle that bad with his wedges.

For better readings of wegdes I place the ball between the red dot and the ST unit a little closer to the impact screen. I have no problem with reading flops.

This ^^^. It's hard for us to get much over 50° launch angle, but using this ball placement certainly helps things.

Thanks for the info. I've been placing the ball on the opposite side of the red dot that you are all recommending. I'll try it tomorrow and update. I'm certainly not coming anywhere near a 50* launch angle. I'm not sure I'm even capable of a 50* launch angle. Let me ask you this, do shadows negatively affect the ST reading the shot. I use the ST in a low light enviroment and my ball dropper tends to cast a bit of a shadow. Do you think this could be causing the no reads.

I believe the Skytrak does its own IR thing, so shadows should have no impact whatsoever. You could hit balls in the dark for all the skytrak cared.

On a related note, I imagine that external sources of IR such as a parabolic heater or that yellow thing in the sky would wash out the skytrak images.

I place the ball forward to hit the screen for wedge. For the driver, wood and hybrid, I place the ball further away from the hitting screen. Only for irons I place the ball on the red dot.

When it gets really cold, i use a costco parabolic heat dish and have done so for the last couple years. I don't see any affects. Might be distance related as well.

I didn’t have many problems with no read before, but after setting it inside new full metal jacket, it is having hard time picking up high shots.
Anything around 50-70yard high shots don’t pick up. 10 out of 10 Times!
It always picks up when I miss hit it, 10 out of 10times!
I may have to remove FMJ now on.

In the Full Metal Jacket, the SkyTrak has to be centered to avoid interference from the protective posts. I use two tees, one forward and one back, which center the device and keep it centered.

I have also had issues with centering and alignment while using the metal protecrive case. I ended up puting the fmj aside and made protectiv case out of memory foam. Im getting much better results now.
