I looked at the 5 Star mats because they seemed reasonably priced but I did not end up buying one. Instead, I bought a 5x5 Matzilla mat from All Turf Mats which looks very similar to the 5 Star Gorilla Urethane backed mat. I wanted a large mat that was a stance and hitting mat all in one. The size was perfect for that. The one I bought is about 1 1/8 inch thick and basically all of the thickness is the height of the turf. It does not have a thick foam backing, just a fairly thin urethane to hold it together. The pictures actually show this pretty well.
My experience with Skytrak was that it had no problems reading on this mat. I had the Skytrak in the FMJ case sitting next to the mat, with the Skytrak raised to the exact height of the mat.
After some time, I decided that the Matzilla mat was too squishy as a stance mat. And I ended up buying a CCE hitting strip which I like hitting from much more. My guess is that it will be more durable, as well.
I needed to raise the Matzilla up to the level of the CCE mat, so I ended up putting the Matzilla mat on a sheet of 1/2 inch plywood and now I love it as a stance mat. It's terrific and having the plywood underneath takes away most of the squishyness. I still sometimes hit off the Matzilla mat, but I prefer the CCE strip.
I own one of them. I purchased the Martin Hall 5 Star GORILLA Perfect Reaction wood tee golf mat or style F.Originally when I brought my son and I only wanted to use it for hitting into a net. Skytrak was never a thought.
That said it works well with Skytrak. The strands on the mat can stand up a little to much and cause some reflection of the skytrak laser.
All in all it works well.
Later this year I am looking at getting a True Strike Mat.
I also own a Martin Hall 5 Star GORILLA Perfect Reaction. I have had it for only three weeks now. Bought a Skytrak at the same time (during Master's week sale). I have had no issues with the mat interfering with the Skytrak performance. My Skytrak is in the FMJ case. I don't have much to compare the Gorilla mat to, other than to my local golf super store here in Michigan that uses CCE mats. I would say the feel of the feet when taking a stance is very comparable to CCE. Time will tell about wear and tear. So far, after only three weeks, all is still like new. The only negative I have noted, is that the mat will walk if hitting down on iron shots. After about 10 full-swing irons shots, I have to tweek the mat back into place. I do not place the Skytrak on the mat, so this isn't a big deal to me, but it's worth mentioning. The mat is sitting on a relatively smooth, indoor, concrete slab that was poured and smoothed only two years ago, so the slab isn't rough to the touch.
I also noticed that the fibers will fluff after a few iron shots and the Skytrak laser will reflect differently before the next shot, but all it takes is a quick step onto the fibers where the laser is pointed and all is fine.
One positive about hitting off this mat (and others like it, I assume), is that you really feel a fat shot when it happens and the skytrak confirms it. It helps you focus on hitting the ball first.
I've had two 3x5 for two years. They wear very well...practically nil. Locked mine down to the concrete with two sided carpet tape. Like the CCE mat, a fat shot is well known. A shot where, at contact, the club starts to touch the mat will be penalized for distance and the accuracy may be thrown off by the club to mat interaction. A perfect strike with release of lag into the back of the ball feels good. There may still be an effect due to the ball interacting with the mat (as opposed to grass)...my SkyTrak ball carries are shorter than IRL...however, my driver carry, off a tee, is also shorter, which may reflect the claustrophobia of swinging indoors.
Yea when your swing is grooving with the 5 Star it feels great. When its off and those fat add up its a quick wrap on the range. My wrist and elbows can't take it.
brettmacy18 when are looking at purchasing one? I am ordering a true strike next week and will be looking to sell my 4x5. I just purchased it in January.
