  • Distances not even close - please help

    hi guys

been following this page for a while but never had the need to post anything.

i need guidance with my skytrak unit, the distances are so far out I am probably one more session from giving up on it and selling it.

    things I have tried -

    new mat
    new balls
moving ball position (in front, behind, on the dot)

    i have literally tried everything

to give clarity it use the unit outside when it’s dusk (no direct sunlight). So it can’t be because of my indoor swing

tonight my 5iron was coming up at 180 carry average, on the course and on GC2 or GC quad it’s a 210-215 carry club. Club speed is coming up at about 88mph, id imagine I am around 100mph standard

my PW I cannot get to fly more than 130yds, that’s a 145-150yd club for me

any advice would be really appreciated

    many thanks

If it is consistent in the relative sense, as a short term solution you could try to jack up the elevation. Looks like it is coming up 15 or so percent short. Assuming your real world yardages are sea level, that should be around 13000 feet. Not sure if it goes that high.

I do think you should try at the range to see apples to apples.

Oh, and club head speed is calculated from ball speed, so disregard that.

Please post a video of your swing - 100mph 5 iron is 6-7 miles an hour away from Jamie Sadlowski and 6 miles an hour above PGA Tour average. That's a huge hit mate, but also make sure that carry vs total is clear.

I have found that people with very club head speeds can put the ball about 2 inches behind the laser dot (away from hitting screen) and get less misreads or no reads. Try that may be.

thanks i'll give that a go.

not that its about a distance debate, but my driver swing speed is 124-126. so yeah i am way above tour average.

skytrak was mainly to be used for wedges and 'scoring' clubs but its jut not usable at the moment

Just fyi since I follow Jamie pretty close (love his swing for his size), I have estimated he maxes out a 7 iron around 115 mph, so 5 iron quite a bit more. That would be full LD swing, not stock swing.

You mention you use it outside, are you near any other buildings or houses? You could be subconsciously hanging back if your hitting in a neighborhood. Just a thought

I'm right there with you. It seems I have an average of about 10% loss of distance.

At first it was really frustrating and I also thought about selling it. Then I realized that I play enough golf to know my distances pretty well, so the shorter distance doesn't bother me much. Especially when it's a very consistent -10%.

To me, and ymmv, I think having accurate shot shape and launch angle is more than enough to justify having the skytrak. To me, that's all I really care about when I'm at the range anyway.

So if you look at it like I do, and have an awesome spot at your house to work on your swing -- it's way worth it and beats the hell out of loading your bag in the tow and heading to the range.

It would, however, be nice if we could have it all.

thats a valid point, but my main thing i want to/need to work on is my wedges as i have a lot of them into greens. if i cant confidently practice yardages it becomes pointless. I'd be better off getting £1400 back and having 100 sessions on GC Quad at my local shop with the cash! haha

I take it from your use of £'s rather than $'s then you're in the UK Sam. Whereabouts are you located as those carry numbers etc. are very similar to mine and I don't see any issues with my unit. I'm up near Manchester and Liverpool and if you're anywhere near there then you could test on mine to see if there is any difference in units.

Hi Andy, thats a really kind offer. I actually live in Swindon, but you've given me a great idea. My dad also has a unit. i should just try his and see what it comes out at! Thanks a lot!

I like Igor-247-golf 's idea, I would love to see video of those high swing speeds. I need something to make me feel worse about my 100-103 driver swing speed.

Sam, what do you get for ball speeds on ST with driver? Can you get it to read over 180 regularly?

Good on you, mate! As I suspected, I feel more inadequate...

If you any data from quad session, you may want to compare launch and spin etc. You are in the extreme end of club head speed. How well do your partial wedges compare to real world?

I know this evidence is anecdotal but I have very rarely seen carry distances over 250 with my 3w on my SkyTrak and my ball speed almost never breaks 150. Last time out I hit a couple 3Ws that had to carry bunkers over 250 out which I was able to do with ease. SkyTrak cannot measure ball speeds from hybrid to driver accurately for me.

Just been hitting balls in the garden again. 85mph ball speed with my 8iron with average of 135yd carry. So basically 30yds short.

ive checked that all the settings are correct tko

going to take into my local store to trg indoors later on, and if it’s not close to correct it’s going up for sale as it’s completely useless like this

Did you end up trying it out on your dad's Skytrak to compare data?

There's definitely something not right with either your setup or the unit itself. My 8 iron is normally a 165-170 carry and that's the numbers I see on my Skytrak pretty much every time I use it as that's my warmup club so the technology within the unit should have no problems reading. I place my ball roughly somewhere near to the laser dot and don't even bother making sure that the logo faces the camera etc.

Do you have anything white or reflective behind you that could be causing issues with the camera images. Try moving your Skytrak to a different location if that's relatively easy to do.

                    Andy

Yeah, seems way off compared to most. I can see maybe 10 yards short if you are a high ball speed, high spin player at least with most irons, but not what he is seeing. Hopefully its something simple in his hitting bay that needs tweaking.
