  • E6 chipping and putting question

    Fixed or not?

Older posts noted that green side and fringe chipping is broken. 20 yards or less and putting. I am experiencing this firsthand with the E6 trial version. Never an issue with WGT.
I do like the flight models better than WGT overall but putting and chipping can be a deal killer for sure.
Does anyone currently use the full E6 1.6 with Skytrak and can highlight their experience and recent shortcomings with the software?
Pls don’t post you should “use TGC instead”, I understand.
    Thx!!

Thx Dan McWhirter your advice along the way was so helpful, as were your older posts.

Thank you! I must admit, I dream of (and will likely fall short) "Connect" with an improved model, improved comms with the device, 4k resolution in the program, a true 4k short throw projector and a 4k quality hitting screen. I don't think I'll wake up Christmas morning and find the dream came true.

Your point is exactly why I am waiting and a key part of the decision. E6 is great, it is way more customizable for multiplayer, looks fantastic, built as a sim and frankly doesn’t have massive hardware requirements. In 2-3 years time computer hardware is much cheaper for running something like TGC 2019 or whatever else comes out along the way, including E6. I don’t need or even feel a desire to pay up for all that is required to use a golf simulator in 4K or 1080p.

Mine is all set at 1080p. The screen, an "Allsports" best, looks great even though close up you see a rather course weave. TV looks great too! 12' wide, we hit from 9', so rather immersive! The only real danger is from tees flying back from the screen like daggers...I hypothesize the tee hits the screen as the stretched screen rebounds from the ball hit, so, like a sling shot (balls fall straight down). One time a tee embedded itself into the screen. The tee never flies back at the hitter, it always shoots left or right, where other folk are sitting. Shield your face, I say. Obviously I need that tee that comes tied to a clawed base attached to the mat. We tried drilling holes and stringing strong plastic tees ($10 bucks gets forty 3" and ten 1"...never broke one yet in real life golf) so they were attached to an anchor by fifty pound test braided fish line...(the effort about equal to making a fishing rig). Getting about twenty drives, half a round for two or five holes for a foursome, the tee or the string would break. I've tried those soft plastic tees that aren't quite long enough for me but they do act civilized. Ha ha...my setup, using real tees, gets downright exciting!

I feel like putting is definitely something that skytrak should look into. The launch direction that the unit sends to the simulation software is horrendous. You'll have 5' putts that launch 7° right, or 20' putts that launch 5° left, even though they were hit straight. I play JNPG and they have a 'putting fix' in place that makes 2° the max it will allow, so at least it's somewhat playable, but 2° will still cause a lot of missed putts.
Is there a way that skytrak could tweak the way it reads putts to be more accurate? Putting alone is probably the biggest reason sim people move on to gc2, which has to hurt skytrak sells.

I will open an issue for putting with the hardware team. For sure, putting is a weak point for us, but I agree it shouldn't be that far off.

While I agree it's definitely better than E6 software but I believe they have simplified and over done it... when I play JNPG I have to use the mouse to pick my target line when putting it will not let you putt severely left or right and that is a result of their putting patch. I think creative has the most realistic putting, you can decide the line you want to take without having to adjust your aim... you can literally Putt 20° left or right of center and that seems more realistic to me.

That is definitely a different way of going about it. I've never heard of people not adjusting their aim on the console. But even so, you need accurate numbers from the skytrak unit, and it is lacking that bad when putting. Your putting style just makes it harder to know if the direction is accurate or not. If you're trying to hit it 20° left, you might not notice if its 5 or 6 degrees off. You notice on a putt that's supposed to go straight though lol.

Bottom of the line is, putting is the weakest part of the skytrak. Very inconsistent. If it can be improved, even just a little, it will help a ton and make simulation much more enjoyable.

You may have misunderstood what I was saying, I have a mark on my mat that represents a straight putt. When I play JNPG any putt with a severe break can not be made because the software limits the direction of "off straight" putts to a very limited amount so in order to make a putt with a decent amount of break you have to "pick" a line with the mouse and try to hit it straight (I want to play the break on my mat not on the screen). I can hit a putt 2 feet left of the mark on my mat and JNPG will show the putt 5 or 6 inches left at best... on creative it will show the "true" direction no matter who far off center you hit it, I agree the putting is lacking but certain software preforms better IMO.

On E6, when the ball is on the fringe, it is the most annoying part. I think there should be an option of either putting or chipping present at that point.

Absolutely correct I believe that's where the 10mph ball speed comes into effect anything less will not register from my experiences on E6 what we had to do was move the golf ball five or six in behind the red dot and try to pinch a 60 to pass over the Red Dot with the appropriate Loft very challenging but if done correctly you will get a decent result

Interesting indeed. I will have to try that out next time I play.

For sure, glad @SkyTrek_Seth may revisit putting/chipping in E6. Thank you! I hope TruGolf will expedite a patch. Fix this and the software will create the optimal user experience in E6 1.6.

@SkyTrek_Seth any updates on the putting and chipping? Also I aligned my SkyTrak and it’s still reading the ball is starting on the left side of the line (right handed). Is there a fix for this?

SkyTrak_Seth and anyone else with experience. Has any progress been made on the putting and chipping issues when using E6 1.6 with SkyTrak? Admittedly, I only have the demo at this point but am kind of disappointed that (1) we can't putt from the fringe, (2) I get a lot of putting no reads, especially when you don't have to hit the putt hard and (3) I get a lot of chipping no reads, especially when you have a short shot. Overall, I like the software, but if 1, 2 and 3 are going to be ongoing issues, it's doubtful that I'd be interested in buying the full package. And while I get the 6 iron method mentioned above is a band aid for the chipping issue, I really don't want to have to use a band aid.

Is this a SkyTrak issue, an E6 issue, or a combo issue?

Hopefully there are some fixes in store. I really only want to use something like E6 to break up the monotony of just hitting into a range environment. I'm not interested in all of the cool playing online against others and stuff like that so moving up to TGC probably isn't in my future although it looks pretty awesome.

                      Thanks for any insight.

Well...I just got a response from E6. They said that they received a change from SkyTrak that would have potentially fixed the chipping and putting issues in 1.6, but they received the change after they had stopped development of the 1.6 version so the change will not be included or pushed out as an update for 1.6. It should however be included in the E6 Connect version. Doesn't do much good for the 1.6.

Certainly SkyTrak can work with E6 to make this work? I feel bad for the people that either recently bought the annual package or sadly paid the one time fee and don't get a couple of basic/essential things like putting and chipping to work.

I have had issues with chipping using Skytrak and TGC sine I bought it. I will try moving the ball an inch towards me and an inch towards my back foot as recommended to see if that helps.
