Im sure this is beaten to death but only had unit for couple weeks..Seems like my short irons pw - 8 iron are shorter than they should be.. I thought they were and when checking against flighscope its about 4-8 yards shorter than flighscope.. If i change my altitude to 2000-2500 it seems get be within a couple yards..

I agree, frustrating. I have game golf and I know my exact (no wind, rain, level shot) and yearly avg for all my clubs... thousands of recorded real time shots on the course and you are correct my yardages are almost exactly 8 yards shorter for wedges through 7 iron. BTW im at 197 feet above sea level, just for kicks I changed the altitude setting to 9000, barely saw a difference. Im frustrated but as long as the ball shape is correct I can just take one more club. I may try a different mat in the future mine is a bit soft but it does mimic fat shots perfectly and easy on the body

Some people are adamant that those who see shorter distances with ST are experiencing their "inside swing." A forum user did an analysis that showed the height of the ST unit relative to the hitting surface impacts distance. And, it has been confirmed that the flight models of ST and TGC do not take spin decay into account with their ball flight models. My guess is that it's mostly the latter two.

Ive heard this concept of "inside swing" and I absolutely buy it. I am still uncomfortable with my 3wood and driver. Definitely not reaching my max swing speed. My confusion lies in the swing speed itself. Its my understanding that without GCquad or trackman or a specific club tracker, ST "calculates" swing speed from measured ball speed. Does anyone have an opinion as to how accurate the swing speed measurement is on ST. Therefore is ball speed where is should focus my attention to determine if im reaching my full potential and not holding back due to space constraints. I understand there is more to this, smash factor, etc.

Ball speed is pretty accurate since it is directly measured. Club head speed is calculated using a fixed smash factor. There are many variables that make this not very accurate (for example where you make contact on your club face).

It could be the mat for me i have a softer mat also that when you catch it heavy it lets you know it.. Thanks for the chime ins though i may try the height thing on the st. pw-7 is the only clubs i really question and it very well could be my not so good swing on a soft mat...lol

1. Elevation: Each 1000 feet is roughly 1%. My experience on ST has been that the ball flight algorithm accurately reflects this. Thus jacking it up to 9000 should add about 9%. That is just physics.I agree, frustrating. 2. Mats: Compared to fairway, balls hit off a mat will launch higher, and with less spin. In terms of carry distance, these may or may not offset. Depending on the particular mat, and also your technique, it could result in a shorter carry than fairway all else the same. The only way to find out is to take the mat outside on an absolutely calm day and measure and compare.
3. Carry distance: When I went outside and compared ST results with laser measured carry for pitch shots, I found the ST to be about 1-2% short on average. Thus, I set elevation to 1500 feet, and my ST carry distances are very close to real life (at sea level).
4. Based on my own anecdotes, as well is ST vs. Trackman comparisons posted online by others, I believe that the ST shortfall is slightly larger for long irons and woods, and larger still for high swing speed players.Last edited by Morini; 11-21-2018, 07:18 AM.
