nVidia GeForce 1070x 100% 3D GPU Only when TGC is open?

Hey guys, we have two simulator bays that both run TGC with Skytraks. One is powered by a laptop, the other with a desktop.

We recently had some issues with TGC running on the desktop which has a 1070x graphics card. Shots were somewhat choppy, and by hole 15 you would take a shot and it was delayed up to a full minute in some cases before it displayed on the screen. The skytrak was in USB mode at the time of problem, so I believe network issues can be ruled out. I took a peek at the task manager and noticed the GPU was at 100% for 3D. it's ram and other usages were below 10%.

As soon as I close The Golf Club App it drops to >5% so I believe we can also rule out malware type issues. I checked to make sure the driver is up to date, it is. Rebooted pc, and still as soon as The Golf Club is opened 3d graphics jumps to 100% and stays there.

So I checked the laptop we have up front. It's on an Intel UHD 630 series gpu, and when TGC is opened on it the 3d gpu usage runs at less than 5%, and it's a less powerful graphics card.

Both are running the game under the "high" graphics setting.

What gives here? Any advice? At this point I'm wondering if I need to uninstall, and reinstall TGC from the PC

I run a GTX 1060 6GB and run at 4K resolution so your 1070 shouldn't have any problems. You may want to grab a 3d benchmark tool... perhaps the card is going bad? You don't see any artifacting or system lock ups.. just slowness?

The only other thing you may check is if you have a built-in video card on your motherboard you can disable that. This is more a laptop issue but if I forget to plug my laptop in then it runs graphics on the cheapo card and things slow way down. Make sure you don't have any type of power saving mode that tries to throttle your video card performance.

I use this benchmark software to test when I build new desktops. https://www.maxon.net/en/products/cinebench/

Seems to have scored great on the benchmark. It doesn't have issues running other software. Jack Nicklaus Perfect Golf runs with the 3d gpu usage at around or less than 50%.

The issue only lies with The Golf Club. I checked power and performance settings and all are set to maximize performance, so I don't believe that's the issue either.

At this point I'd really like to uninstall/reinstall TGC from the computer. Has anyone else done this? Will we have an issue with our licensing and activation if it's on the same pc it was originally installed on?

Have you tried reducing the amount of trees and details to see if that helps? I have a 1070 card and don't have any issues running 4k. Though I have kept the detail settings the same as previously on when I was playing on HD (1080p res). I don't remember off the top of my head but it was something in the middle setting on the dial for the trees and details like that.

Tried dialing tree detail to minumum settings, no change. Tried starting the app in the "low" graphics quality setting, no change. Doesn't seem to matter what the settings are, if the app is open 3d gpu utilization is at 100%

Are you playing in full-screen or windowed mode?

              I tried both, didn't make a difference.

I would try a repair before uninstall and reinstall. Should be an option with 3.5 install

It's normal for a GPU to run at or near 100%, otherwise you wasted your money buying a better one than needed. The 1070 is above the recommended video card, plenty good and works great. Make sure VSYNC is on otherwise your CPU could be saturated trying to keep up with the GPU which could cause your symptoms especially with a Skytrak. (What is your frame rate?).

You said it is a recent problem. What changed?

As I said, 100% is proper if your system is optimally configured. But it's obviously not and the most likely candidate (given you've checked all the things the others have mentioned) is a frame rate that is too high due to VSYNC being off. Tell us the frame rate and status of VSYNC.

The laptop is probably running at a lower resolution and much lower frame rate (and possibly lower quality settings within TGC). I'd be interested in the status of all those given the UHD 630 is well below Protee's minimum requirements.

I assume you are using Protee's recommended TGC quality settings. They can cause problems if set too high.

The laptops is actually running a higher resolution and has the tree quality settings near the max, runs great with no issues.

How would I go about checking the frame rate?

TGC uses all the GPU power it can get for maximum performance. Check the object details, number of trees etc. Maybe this has been set to max values. Leave object details set to 1 or 2. Number of trees and tree quality at 2000 is plenty.

Coming back to the original issue and the statement: "skytrak was in USB mode at the time of problem, so I believe network issues can be ruled out".

I have had similar issues in the past and it was defo network related. It wasn't the network connection between the PC and the SkyTrak which was the issue, it was the connection between the PC and the internet which caused the problem. The answer in my case was just to give all the network hardware a bounce, router, powerlines and wifi access point. Soon as I did that, the problem went away.

Did by chance you recently run a driver update ? Maybe roll back the driver to a previous version and see if your issue corrects itself. Just a thought ?

A windows update seems to have fixed this problem. As far as I can tell the driver for the graphics card hadn't changed since we installed TGC.

After a recent round of windows update the 3d utilization is lower, and the game is back to playing smooth as silk.
