    Misreads, what to look for?

    Hello,

i have had my ST for a couple of weeks now and i’m very happy with the unit. For me it is mostly a practice aid which hopefully will keep my swing up to date during the winter, or maybe even better.

I’m quite new to golf (15 hcp) so it’s hard for me to know for sure when and if the unit misread shots. Is there anything special to look for? Is there a typical misread that even a non skilled golfer can look for?

I wonder because i can see a tendency for shorter pitches, under 40 yards, to be a little random in HLA/direction. One shot that clearly hit left target in the net shows right on ST. I’d say that issue goes away with longer shots. It is not constant, maybe biased towards right on ST.

My mat is just a ordinary carpet and i have tried to put the forward and back in the stance. No white objects as well.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.

    Cheers

IMO, HLA is where ST struggles. The other thing to look for on misreads is the spin number, sometimes you can get really high or low or a crazy amount of side spin/spin axis.

Ok i see. I took it to the range when it was brand new and to me the direction seemed to be spot on.

Strange, i’ve read threads here on users with alignment issues and that a short safe chip that is staight is recommended to see if ones irl target correspond to the ST.

Not a single short chip...use the average of several. Align the unit to remove the bias.

In general it's not a good idea to make decisions based on a single shot. Not even in real life. Look for trends.

That makes sense. My point was that chipping seem less reliable than a full 7 iron shot.

I'm also kind of a ST newb, but I've implemented some things I read here about alignment specifically which have been helpful in minimizing misreads..
-try making a habit of using the alignment mode before your sessions (put a piece of tape down to establish your target line)
-are you placing your ST on your hitting mat or off to the side? (couldn't tell if you meant carpet floor or a strip of cut out carpet) keep an eye on the position of your mat..I'm using a heavy realfeel mat but it can still shift a bit on concrete, so putting painters tape down outlining the corners helps keep that in check
-if you use the metal case, look down at the gap btwn your ST and the front face of the metal case... when I first screwed my device in place, it was canted...which threw me off by at least a degree or two.

I preferred to use 7 iron, 1/2 to 3/4 punch shots, not short chips to see the impact. It leaves a bigger dent in the screen as well to confirm location.

Great input, thanks. I’m hitting from the actual carpet in the livingroom with som foam underneath it.

                wbond, thanks!

This forum is one of the reasons i got the ST, the support here is great.

Yes, that is a good advice. I typically hit Steve Stricker style 30-60 yard shots. I used to hang a string, which I would hit about 30% of the time. If one of those shots that hit the string read with zero HLA I am in business. Now that I trust my ST to be perpendicular, I just lay one alignment stick against the case, and eyeball a second one to be parallel on the target line. I take two easy 7 iron punch shots, and if they read straight, I am happy.

ST does struggle with HLA as it compares the ball sizes between the two images. As mentioned, the averages are accurate. The last time I checked, I was only a few yards offline on average over 60 shots. Any one shot may be misread. It is possible that we can minimize this. I imagine that having a dark non reflective background for example would get better HLA. Maybe some balls read better than others.
