  • SkyTrak sidespin vs. ball path & club face angle

    I've read about a 'draw bias' with SkyTrak, but still am puzzled by the sidespin numbers I see, especially on iron shots. The attached screenshot shows the data for a shot with my PW; straight ball path, square club face...where did the -2048 RPM of sidespin at -13.1 (left) come from?

    Am I being fooled because the ball path and club face metrics are approximations, while the sidespin number is real? Just want to know what data I should trust (and how to avoid iron shots that wind up 15-20 yds left of target!)

    Skytrak doesn't capture club data bro.... You're not gonna get 1.45 smash from a pitching wedge.

    You have club data turned "OFF" in TGC Settings. What this means is that club path/face angle will always be 0 or straight...

    You just hooked this one man. You're launching a pitching wedge at 19degrees. It probably should be around 24 degrees.

    Getting 13 degrees of spin axis on a pitching wedge is really hard unless you have insane shaft lean or a really shut face at impact. You prolly have a bit of both going.

    As spin loft increases, spin-axis will decrease(provided face-to-path remains the same).

      Thanks for the input; I think you're probably right on all counts. Only thing is I'm pretty sure I have club data turned "ON". My TGC settings are below and I definitely see different readings coming up for swing path and club face angle (i.e. it isn't always straight/square like in the PW shot above). Maybe something weird happened with the calculation/display of that data on this particular shot.

      [General]
      High BackSpin Correction=OFF
      Show Club Data=ON
      Putting Straight=ON
      TGC Borderless Window=OFF
      Platform=TGC2019

    I have a growing suspicion, after four years of having the SkyTrak, that the matt is grabbing the heel of my clubs. My clubs don't lie flat, but rather tilted toward the heel, at my preferred stance. Closing the distance enough for a flat lie (say three inches), feels uncomfortable, but is more accurate. On the real course I do often grab some dirt on the heel. I'd get the lie changed but the club guy says the forged heads might crack because of their age (Really?! Forged steel).

      Dan McWhirter don't do it if you have an impact screen, or you'll leave the marker on the screen. Or at least don't do it too often.

      Yes, that's possible Dan McWhirter - I went to a club/testing where Wilson did some iron fitting on my swing. One of the things they did was place a certain type of plastic mat under the ball which they looked at marks left on the club to measure my lie angle at impact. That is one way you could find out, just head over to Dick's or something and get an iron fitting? I was told the standard lie fit me perfectly and no need to consider an adjustment of lie on my irons.

      Dan McWhirter, you make a great point. I think I may have a similar issue and am long overdue to either 1) have my current clubs fit to me or 2) purchase new clubs and have those fit to me for proper lie angle.

      I'm guessing it'll probably have to be the second option, since my current irons are forged (Titleist 775CB).
