  • Skytrak spin questions

    Hi there,

I've recently bought a skytrak and have a couple of questions. Any feedback is appreciated!
    1. Does the skytrak unit factor in the launch direction angle when calculating the side spin/spin axis? it seems to be far easier to draw a ball if you start the ball left and fade if you start the ball to the right. I have to work extremely hard to start the ball away from the centre line and bring it back. I don't think I've ever started a ball on one side of centre and had it finish on the opposite side (only bang on centre).
Side note: it is a lot easier in CG3D.
    2. Does the shot shape factor in the side spin/back spin ratio? I've never seen so much shape on wedges and short irons before using the skytrak!
    3. Does anyone else have a unit that will never ever miss a hook or a slice but will have a no read on nearly every single shot that they flush?
    Cheers.

    1. Yes. In real life, too, it's easier to draw a pull (and fade a push), because your club face is already likely closed to your path with a pull and open to your path with a fade. SkyTrak does fine measuring push draws and pull fades for me and many others. It may exaggerate spin axis effect slightly due to its ball flight algorithm not taking into account spin decay.

    2. I would assume so, but lack of spin decay may be at play here, too.

    3. Not me. Check your unit height (bottom of unit flush with mat) and alignment. See https://gunghogolf.com/articles/how-...n-your-skytrak and https://gunghogolf.com/articles/indo...ndrome-skytrak

In general, the better the player, the more accurate they consider their SkyTrak. Here are 20 9-iron shots from a good (+2) player - all baby push draws:

Thanks for the response. In regards to Q1 - I should have been more clear. When I say starting the ball left or right, this is with my body alignment adjustment (not club path adjustment and not changing skytrak alignment). When I draw the ball If I align a couple of degrees left of centre (club path remains in-to-out in respect to my body alignment) it is easier to draw and moves into a hook, the further away I am from centre. But if I align to the right, the shot will be straight pushes or fades (when trying to draw)

I know these units are supposed to be used with the stance aligned parallel with the target line. I'm just experimenting with the stance adjustment in an attempt to remove the effect of club path vs face relationship that you mention.

I'm careful to not let my shot change based on the fact that I'm aligned further left (I know most people would tend to use an increased in-to-out swing path towards to the screen).

I've been using the unit for 3 weeks and have been conscious of unit alignment, "indoor swing" etc before asking these Qs. The weird thing is when using CG3D, the shot shape seems to end up a lot more like I would expect.

        Editing a comment
The skytrak driving range is missing a spin decay calculation and thus over exaggerates draws or cuts
