Buying a new or used SkyTrak

    Hello everyone,

I'm considering buying a Skytrak while waiting for the Mevo+ and then comparing the two and selling the one I don't want to keep. A few questions on buying a unit (I guess it applies to Mevo+ as well):

    1) Are there issues with buying a used SkyTrak (or Mevo) on eBay or this site? Problems with transferring ownership, and are older units not current with hardware/software?

    2) Are there benefits with buying direct from the company, or benefits from buying through a reseller?

    Thanks for all the input!

    Hi Noob, great questions.

As with buying any used piece of electronic equipment, there are risks involved in buying a used launch monitor. Problems do occur with them, and sometimes those problems are the reason the owner is selling (whether they admit that or not). Some problems can be subtle (like out of calibration reads), and some show-stopping (like burned out laser curtains in a SkyTrak). It's safest to buy a unit that is still under the manufacturer's warranty, and always insist on seeing a video of the unit picking up shots and displaying them (from both RH and LH sides in the case of a SkyTrak). Repairs (if possible) by the manufacturer can cost up to $500-600 depending on what's wrong with the unit.

Some companies do charge for change of ownership of the unit and/or the software licenses connected to the unit. You'll need to check with each manufacturer of the hardware and software to know for sure.

Currently, used prices for both units are typically exceeding the new price by 1.2-1.5X due to the short supply, so it doesn't make a lot of financial sense to buy used unless you just cannot wait for delivery.

Buying either new unit through a dealer does not have any downside as compared to buying directly from the manufacturer (unless the reseller is shady/not authorized), and sometimes carries additional benefits. When someone buys a Mevo+ or SkyTrak through my dealership (https://gunghogolf.com), they get all the factory warranty and support, plus my personal support by phone, email, and text, and in the case of SkyTrak, they get free lifetime access to my Advanced Analytics for SkyTrak, a cloud-based app that is the best way to analyze your shot data over time (along with calculated club data like path, face, AoA, and dyn loft). For the Mevo+, I offer free shipping and no sales tax to save you some money.

Hope this helps! Give me a call or email anytime if you want to discuss any aspect of your sim buildout.
