  • HLA error on short shots

My ST reads pretty well from about 50 yards and up. For the most part its within +/- 2 degrees left or right. I'll get a wild one every 20 shots or so which is about normal. But as soon as I start hitting short wedges or chips (50 yds or less) the HLA goes crazy. A shot that hits my screen 4 or 5 degrees right might read 5 or 6 to the left or vice versa. Dead center might shoot off to the side or may read perfectly. There doesn't seem to be a pattern or any rhyme or reason to the misreads. VLA doesn't seem to make a difference nor does ball placement relative to the laser. Any ideas as to the HLA discrepancy between long and short shots?

If you are using Protective Metal Case, try a few shots without this protection. My experience is that in some cases (short shots) this protect affects the reading of HLA. Then try these shots with the ball placed outside the red dot (closer or farther to the impact screen).

I see that this was your first post, are you a new Skytrak user? I would check my setup first, make sure that the bottom of your Skytrak is dead even with your hitting surface and make sure that there are no white or light colored items in the background. A bad setup is the cause of 99% of issues with Skytrak.

If you are talking about high lofted shots, a couple things can happen. It may be partially out of view, which would reduce HLA accuracy significantly. Second, since the lens is wide angle, more distortion correction is required at edges of field of view, leading to more error. Finally, as mirek sugggests, the case can also block the view of the ball. Also, as jpotas mentions, having the unit at the correct height is important for shots at the extreme FOV.

The same holds true for very low shots, such as running chips. Good idea to put low shots in front of dot, and high shots behind. Also, test without case.
