So I received my ST today and love the accuracy/ease of use. However, it makes me nervous having it so close and slightly in front. Anyone have any protection ideas until the protective case is released? I was planning on using it with our First Tee kids but I am holding off until the unit can be protected.

Just an update here - due to overwhelming request for a leveling feature, we sent the designs back to incorporate that. Unfortunately, that took a ready-to-go product and sent it back to square one. However, finalizing designs again and I have to say, it's much better than the first iteration. It will be worth the wait!!

To protect I've been using an amazon box, it will protect the sides, though not the front, so if using a net like the net return, the ball bounces back and could possibly hit the SkyTrak, however obv this does not protect if you hit such a bad shot it hit the SkyTrak, I did at one time cut the box so that only the rectangular portion of the cameras was exposed
At :03 you can see me using a box here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVtQkmyL18A

Is there anyway to protect the entire unit? Everything I've seen so far has a cutout. I have friends who have some not so trustworthy swings, and I know it's a matter of time before they shank on right into the opening and crack the black portion of the unit.

I made an attempt to build a cradle with protection that a ball can't get thru but failed. Can't say I spent to much time on experimenting so I have no idea if it is possible or not. Here is an image of what the sensors look like behind the IR pas filter, if you want to experiment. (I did not want to open the unit and void the warranty so the image is taken with an IR camera and powerful IR FLASH)
I ended up with the protection you can see in the "horizontal launch accuracy ... " thread. It has to be rigid and heavy enough so it does not fall if hit by a ball. A friend already did a live test by hitting what I believe was a severe toe shot with a hybrid that went straight in to the protection enclosure. Unit and protection survived but if that ball would have gone in the opening and hit the Skytrak I believe that would have been "game over". The plastic in the front is 6mm.
As you can see I also have a bunch of concrete blocks so it does not move when hit by bounce back balls. (That one is probably an overkill but they where laying around so why not)
The top is a lid that comes off so I can turn the unit on/off.
I have kind of given up the quest for a better protection since I have never even been close to hitting the unit and high handicappers and kids are no longer allowed.

Here is my original comment - if this is being moderated for some reason, please feel free to mention it.
I totally agree with you. I do not understand why hardware companies not see the light of the fact that adoption would be far greater and wide spread when platforms are "open". A good example is Apple and the app store. Facebook, exactly the same, when API's are available your customer based grows exponentially due to the opportunities. As you said, my opinions might be naive as well, however, I think of myself as a "model customer" for ST, and as I have mentioned in other posts, in order to stay relevant in a changing, growing or evolving market you have to be open, flexible and willing to consider greater market opportunities.
@davray Are you a software/hardware/app developer? Maybe we should consider starting a "Hacking Skytrak" thread on gsf

Nope. I have had my Skytrak since the first part of December. I have shanked a hand full of balls in its direction, and have never hit it. I would say from my experience that a shank will not hit the unit if you have the ball placed on the laser dot.
Someone did mention very early on that did hit the unit when the miss hit a ball trying to hit a flop shot off of a mat.
IMO all this extra effort put into protecting the unit is not needed.

Someone else had already tried to cover the camera window and found that it would not read correctly. I just used a dremel with the cutout bit to make the opening.

Found the little spirt levels on eBay and Perspex sheets but what did you use to cut to size and out for the cameras. Did you try leaving the cameras covered ? Thanks.
