  • New Skytrak user getting weird results

I finally bit the bullet and bought a skytrak last week. I am having some issues
    1) I cant seem to get my wifi to connect through the sky trak. On my ipad I can connect to the skytrak and to my wifi independently but when I try to use networking mode it says unable to join network. This also means I cannot register the device.

    2) this is most important..the distances are way off. I was hitting a 6 iron last night in direct mode and it was going 130 (175 club). I am a 10 handicap so I am pretty sure I am not hitting it 130. I was not too anal on setting the unit up with alignment but I think I am close. The unit is sitting on a mat level with the hitting surface and I am putting the ball directly on the red dot.

Please help..I do not want to have to send this back.

    thanks

I am looking at the FAQ thread as others were having problems with WIFI as well. My real issue is the distances. If I cannot get the distances accurate then there is no use for this unit.

This may be dumb, but are you using the latest version of the iPad app? Mid irons was something they fixed.
Also id make sure you are using white balls, that are in relatively good shape. Were you getting similar results with other clubs ?
I'd be curious to see your other data #s if you could share them.
I haven't even tested my skytrak yet, so I really can't speak from any personal experience, but I was just trying to share what I've seen posted on these forums.

Hi...yes I downloaded the app last night so I assume it is the latest and greatest. All of my golf balls were new that I used last night. The swing speed seemed pretty low. It was saying 70-75 mph even when I was going all out on my 6 iron. Maybe there is in issue that it did not pick the correct club. I selected 6 iron and it showed 6 iron in the app but those are PW numbers

I found that placing the ball slightly behind the red dot made it pick up more accurately. It was actually showing a draw then the ball faded, but everything worked out normally after placing just slightly behind the red dot. Play around with the position of the ball.

130y for 10 HCPer with 6 iron does sound short. I recently played a 4 day/5 round tournament and my carry distances Skytrak vs. real life are close enough to be considered accurate. The reason I use words like close enough and considered accurate is because that way of comparing is not very scientific.
I think we could comment better if you posted all the data or maybe a screen shot.
If we assume your spin is normal for a 6 iron then the biggest influence will be vertical launch angle and ball speed. The way Skytrak measures ball speed it should be very accurate. If anything a miss aligned unit will give you higher ball speed and longer distance than actual.

The way the Skytrak measures the trig point is by 2 laser lines. Conceptually if you think about a box that is 10" on all sides and place this box in front of the ball placement laser dot.
Then for a shot to be detected and properly measured it needs to pas thru this box entering thru the front and exiting thru the back and not top.
That is why we can place the ball way back vs. the laser dot if the VLA is low and need to place it slightly in front for a lofted wedge shot.

PS. The 10" cube is just a rough assumption. I have no idea what the actual "shot volume" is.

I am running V1.8.6, and seeing similar results--15 to 20 yards short of what I typically hit (tried pitching wedge, 8i and 5i). The set up is outdoors (not in sun) and off a mat, hitting into a net ~10ft away. ST is level, 500ft, 70 degrees, no wind, 50% humidity. I tried Titleist and Top Flight white golf balls. Any ideas on how to correct?

Dave there is not much you can do, it is what it is.

Where at you swinging? Indoors? Is the unit level and at the same height as your mat? Post a pictur of your setup and some screenshots of your 6 iron. Blythe way, club selection has no influence on the numbers.

              srb165,

Sorry to hear that you are having troubles. Let's see if we can get to the bottom of it.

              1) Network Mode:
              - Make sure you aren't connected to a Guest Network
              - Make sure that you program the unit with your network credentials CASE sensitive
              - Make sure that after you program the unit through the connection process, that your iPad goes back and connects to that same network (can be an issue if you have 2 networks)

              2) Bad Readings
-That's crazy...I can't think of what could possibly cause that. Could you possibly just post up the launch data from one of the shots? It could be a hardware issue (damaged in shipping?) but have not come across that yet.

              Thanks,
              Seth

I have attached a picture of my setup and the launch numbers from my 6 iron.

I hit a 3 hybrid and only got 175 total yardage (215 for me), 5 iron 150 (185 for me). This is really frustrating. I have altitute set at 500 as I am in Raleigh NC.

                thanks,
                stephen

I received my unit Monday and mailed it back Tuesday because I experienced the exact same thing (I have similar distances to you - 11hcp).

Having a hard time reading the screen shot. From what I can see the vertical launch angle seems low for a 6-iron (its at pga tour average but the ball speed is well below that average). Spin seems within reason. Is the side-spin direction to the right? I am going to make an assumption that you aren't really hitting the ball that low. If I were you I would check the level of the unit to gravity - not just to the hitting mat. A few degrees off can really effect your numbers.

I will get a level and put on top of the unit to check.

Do you guys have trouble with direct connect to the unit? 75% of the time I have tried to use the thing the "skytrak WIFI" does not show up when I try to connect. I have to turn off the unit 3 or 4 times before it broadcasts the signal. I turn on the ipad go to the skytrak app and do direct connect. I then go to my wifi settings and look for skytrak wifi. Like I said 75% of the time it does not show up. Do I have a defective unit or something. I am a network engineer so I am not a newbie to technology lol. I really wanted this to work so I did not have to buy a gc2. I had a protee before and while it was a pain to get it up and running it was at least accurate. My experience thus far has been very bad with skytrak.

I put a level on the unit and it was slightly off. Just enough that that a sheet of paper folded one in the back made it level. But as I mentioned before, I can hardly ever connect to the unit. Here is a screenshot of my ipad next to the skytrak. You can see "Steelers" which is my network but no "skytrak" wifi. I cannot even use the thing to try it out again.

                    thanks,
                    stephen

This all sounds very strange. I wonder if your unit is damaged somehow. It sounds like we should get you a replacement. Hang tight for a sec....

Stephen, after confirming level or that close (my setup was off 3 degrees which was causing issues), that isn't your issue. I have had my unit since December and I find it accurate and I have no connection issues. Hang in there... when Seth gets this taken care of, you are going to like the product and practicing with it.
