  • Skytrak vs GC2

I recently got a GC2. A friend gave me a good deal on one so I went for it.

Long story short, unless you have plenty of extra cash lying around, I'm not sure it's worth the extra cost over a Skytrak.

For everyone with a Skytrak, rest assured, the data from the Skytrak is VERY accurate. Practically identical to the GC2.

I've had the Skytrak for a number of years so know all my numbers with it really well and the GC2 numbers are the exact same.

I suppose what the GC2 gives is a bit more confidence in the numbers. A bit of peace of mind. For some reason we tend to question odd numbers on the Skytrak but will accept the same numbers on the GC2, and I suppose thats where the "value" is in the hefty upcharge.

For example, my spin numbers on the Skytrak were perfect from driver down to 8 iron, but from 9 iron to wedges they started getting very low. Like 2800 spin on brand new wedges. I obviously thought the Skytrak must have an issue reading my wedges.

Guess what. The spin is the exact same on the GC2. Maybe it's my mat ?

It's that certainty that you are really paying for in my opinion.

Either way, I suppose this is just a post for those with a Skytrak. Trust the numbers. Its a great unit.

I had very little no reads with my Skytrak and the 2-3 second delay never bothered me. (Its like 0.5-1 sec on the GC2) The delay on the skytrak always seemed worse when you were watching someone else hit rather than when you were hitting yourself, as by the time you finish your swing the ball was taking off.

The range on the Skytrak is infinitely better than FR1 too. One of the best out there.

If people are having issues with misreads, maybe I can see the frustration and the need the change, but if you are not having issues with misreads, enjoy the Skytrak. It's as good as anything out there IMO.

I also upgraded from a Skytrak and I'd say I am much happier with a gc2 for the following reasons:
    1) no annual cost. Cost to buy a gc2 is more but if you're patient you can find one for a similar price to a new Skytrak 2) if you play sim golf the Skytrak can not read spin for shots less than. 20 yards. That's why everything rolls out a mile. Putting is also better on a gc2 if you enjoy that.
    3) setup is much easier and gc2 is not as picky. The unit does not have to be perfectly level and you don't have to place ball exactly on dot/behind/in front depending on shot shot type
    4) gc2 has much larger hitting zone
    5) ball delay with Skytrak is much greater than gc2. Especially with golftec takeover
    6) misreads/no reads are way less with gc2 (about 90% for me)
    7) can take to the driving range easily

Skytrak reads spin for shots under 20 yards, I did a lot of experimenting with different balls about 2 months ago because I noticed low spin numbers with my wedges. TGC has issues, not Skytrak. @U.P.O confirmed that.

you're right jpotas. I didn't word things correctly at all. TGC2019 has a short game correction for chips less than 20 yards to help with no reads and this causes spin to not be read correctly. The problem is when you turn this setting off the Skytrak has so many no reads under 10 yards that chipping is almost unusable so most play with the setting turned on.

I had no annual cost with skytrak, I used my sim range and skills matrix etc..

I didnt have issues with chipping, putting, no reads. I didn't take to the range and the delay didn't bother me.

The larger hitting zone is nice (it saved me buying a new mat) but the skytrak one didn't bother me either.

I do agree with you with the GC2 being less picky though. Skytrak is definitely a lot fussier about everything, but if you get it set up right and dont move it, it works great.

If the above issues are issues for anyone, then I agree a GC2 solves those issues but if they aren't then....

I suppose i just see posts on here sometimes with people questioning the Skytraks numbers so I just want to give people confidence that the numbers Skytrak throw out match very closely with the GC2s.

U.P.O. can you do a spin comparison of chip shots below 20 yards and post your findings?

I haven't done it with both the Skytrak and the GC2 measuring the same shot, but just from my observations, the numbers appear the same.

Saying that, my spin is very low with short chips anyway. I initially thought it was the Skytrak but the GC2 reads the same.

Not sure if its my mat or my strike or a combination of both. I do tend to hit high soft landing chips rather than low spinny ones though but both units read about the same.

I did test of my Skytrak vs quad on 5 main parameters with 6 iron. Did on 2 separate occasions. Was blown away at how in line they were. Misreads we’re about 1 in 10/15 and these are always blindingly obvious. No gc3 ball enabled is just twice priv3 of Skytrak was thinking of upgrading but really don’t see how can justify. FYI I’m careful with logo to target, Skytrak level and not in metal case, dark background so easy to get 3 good pictures
