I had to play around with the ball placement for every type shot. Basically, any shot (including putts) that is a low LA shot place the ball behind the dot 3/4 to 1-1/2 inch. For high LA shots place the ball 1/2 inch in front of the dot. The thing to remember is you are hitting through a window. The ball has to go through the window to be captured. So if your low shots are not being captured move the ball back. If the high ones are not being captured move it forward until you find the sweet spot. Once you find the spot it should be good to go. the color of the club head is not a factor for me I use a white 3 wood and have no problems.

Also I agree that the unit has to be on a separate surface. Mine is 1/4" above the hitting surface. I used a 1/2" plywood with sheetrock screws in each corner so they bury themselves in the carpet and the unit stays put.

Not enough ceiling height for driver, but this discussion caught my interest. I gripped down to the shaft and took my chances with driver. Carry distance was way too short and ball speed was no faster than my hybrid. I made the range firm and with 20yds of roll out my longest drive was 269. I'm thinking carry distance was short by around 35 yds. Maybe a bit less cause i was gripped down almost to the shaft. The shots were consistently off so hopefully skytrak can make some sort of adjustment when using driver. I don't want anything changed when it comes to iron play spot on!

You guys are checking the measured numbers vs something like Flightscope Optimizer...right?

Just so that everyone knows whether you're saying that the unit is measuring the data correct, and the ball flight algorithm is wrong or whatever...

I've regularly see 135-138 with my 16* HY - but fastest i've seen personally is 140.

I believe in one of these threads someone posted a screen shot of 180... That's the fastest I've seen on mine.

Mine average around the 165-170mph mark and I think the highest I've seen is something like 173

when you get it up to 170 what carry and total distance do you get? I haven't registered a shot higher than 152 and that was 3 wood off the deck

Max legally obtainable carry distance at sea level, level ground, no wind:
              170 mph ball speed = 283.3 yards
              152 mph ball speed = 253 yards

Roll distance varies with with turf conditions.

Based on what parameters? If you change LA and spin, you can carry farther optimizing those two inputs? At 18 VLA and 2K spin, you get 307 carry with FTO.

Thanks fhann. I'll have to try it outdoors when it gets nice. I won't have to worry about the low ceiling. Maybe my woods will be more accurate then. I feel my unit is really accurate on the irons. I just don't get much of an increase in ball speed on anything from hybrid up. My 3 wood and driver ball speed arent that noticeably higher than my hybrid.

                Hi wbond:

The FTO software program does show 307 carry distance associated with a ball speed of 170 mph, so long as it is launched at vertical launch angle of 18 degrees and with 2000 rpm. That is a theoretical algorithm that is used to calculate that shot outcome. It can be achieved by using a robot, a positive angle of attack at nearly 14 degrees using a 5 degree lofted driver. That is beyond the capability of even most champion long drivers to achieve that high of a positive angle of attack and they tee the ball so high and use a very different swing to compete in long drive championships. That outcome may not ever be achievable by a human being. It is safe to say that trying to achieve that distance under that high of a vertical launch angle and 170 mph ball speed is not something that can be consistenly reproduced by a human golfer.

                  referenced post from comment above:

Just wanted to see if anybody else went to the range and actually tested it with the woods and how accurate it was. And what results they came up with. Well

Carry was 280 which matches what I see on other launch monitors like trackman, flightscope etc.

I need to try it with my long drive club though to see what I can get it up to. Should be in the high 180, low 190's then

A lot of you seem to have you max ball speeds w 3 woods or 3 woods off deck - and many have mentioned they don't see noticeable increase in ball speed from hybrids to 3 wood to driver. I see similar on my ST - I seem to be able to hit a 3 wood off deck farther than driver off tee and the increase in ball speed for driver off tee is not noticeably higher than 3 wood off deck or hybrid. I wonder why this is? Is it the ST or is it because we're all hitting off mats and that might affect ball speed on shots off tees (MrHogan had mentioned something about losing a few mph when your mat moves a little bit)?

Maybe the shorter length on the hybrid or three wood is allowing better center face contact, thus ball speed might be maximized. Does the Skytrak unit actually measure the clubhead speed? If not, then check your contact on the face of your clubs using foot powder sprayed on the face prior to hitting the golf ball. Then check how centered the impact point is. This will give you an indication about the quality of the stike on the golf ball and can help with confidence on how your well your launch monitor is actually capturing the ball speed.

You are absolutely correct - that's why amateurs tend to hit the ball further or as far w their 3 woods as their drivers.

My problem is where I live don't have a driving range nearby I can test real-life driver distances vs ST (can only hit drivers into net 150 yards away so useless) though I have tested all irons and believe distances are very accurate. But when I do play on course, my driver comes back to life w distances I expect. Maybe my driver swing indoors or into net in backyard is just way too timid thus robbing me of driver distance on ST? Or is it the mat or something else? That's why I was really curious when someone posted they actually got longer distances if they level their ST about 1-1.5 inch higher than the mat... Thus I actually believe ST is accurate just questioning if my setup is somehow throwing it off for drivers or shots of tee?

                        Club speed is not measured.
