I had to play around with the ball placement for every type shot. Basically, any shot (including putts) that is a low LA shot place the ball behind the dot 3/4 to 1-1/2 inch. For high LA shots place the ball 1/2 inch in front of the dot. The thing to remember is you are hitting through a window. The ball has to go through the window to be captured. So if your low shots are not being captured move the ball back. If the high ones are not being captured move it forward until you find the sweet spot. Once you find the spot it should be good to go. the color of the club head is not a factor for me I use a white 3 wood and have no problems.
Also I agree that the unit has to be on a separate surface. Mine is 1/4" above the hitting surface. I used a 1/2" plywood with sheetrock screws in each corner so they bury themselves in the carpet and the unit stays put.
