Early thoughts on TGC vs PG

I played a round at Augusta last night on PG (thanks to those that helped me sort out my issues!). I had a great time, and I was pretty impressed with the software as a whole.

I did have a few issues of shots not registering. It didn't seem limited to any particular type of shot. It happened more often than I'd like, and none of the shots were egregiously bad (in fact, most of them were quite good). I'd really like to see those types of problems eliminated.

I thought the game looked fine, but I did end up bumping down the settings a bit. I never tried to run them at full settings, my computer is a tad dated but I think it should still be able to handle it. I just wanted to make sure I didn't have any unnecessary problems in my first run through.

All, just wanted to remind everyone I created a Remote Keyboard for controlling PG. Simply install the app on an iPad. Makes playing much better so you don't have to use a keyboard. Since PG does require some mouse clicks, I have a flat touch pad mouse mounted next to where my iPad is mounted. Recommend setting up a touch pad mouse if you are a PG user. Makes clicking and aiming in map and on greens much easier.

Both versions of the course are nice. I've played Magnolia so much that I think of that as the way Augusta really is but the truth is I have no idea which is closer. The slopes of Magnolia feel more severe, especially in the fairways. I think in the end it comes down to if you prefer PG or TGC. It is great that now both have a really good version of Augusta. At the moment I think I prefer TGC over PG. I like some of the features of PG that TGC lacks however I like the control interface of TGC and the graphics of TGC are crisper also.

I went for TGC and, looking at these 2 videos, I'm glad I did!... TGC looks miles better in my opinion... better graphics, more realistic ball flight, more realistic putting etc

ks-man. The videos your download and your insight is much appreciated by me and I am sure by all in the sim golf community. Thanks! It is challenging to compare any golf simulator software's graphics/image using a monitored display as the medium; whereas when one is playing sim golf the image in which we are immersed is on the impact screen. Consequently images/graphics from a monitor would be a true comparison if playing the video version of these software. However, I understand the limitations of showing videos of a round with the impact screen and the readily available technology that translates a monitored display to a you tube video. Generally, the monitored display will be more pleasing to the eye since most have higher resolutions and contrast ratios compared to a projected image. Clearly there are limitations when comparing different software images/graphics in a golf sim since the quality of these images are a function of impact screen material, ambient light, projector resolution/lumens/contrast ratio, computer graphics card, etc. If just talking about the graphics of a course, independent of software function, how would you compare the two as you are teeing off and looking at the fairway. What is the depth perception while on the tee box. Do you feel as you are looking down the fairway you are looking at 250 yards out or does it look like 100 yards out? How would you compare and contrast the fluidity of the course. Is one more realistic in terms of tree/plant movement, shadows, etc. In my mind these features are what separates and distinguishes simulator golf software graphics/images. Having said that the golf simulator community is in good hands knowing there are such high quality software options, all that are affordable. Thanks.

You're welcome. I'll be honest, at no point with either software do I forget the fact that I'm in my basement hitting into a screen. I'm not necessarily going for pure/true immersion yet rather accurately recreating my golf game to become better and have a lot of fun in the process. I really wouldn't even know off the type of my head which one when trying to look through my screen feels more like I'm actually looking down the fairway.

Perhaps in years time we will be able to wear an Occulus Rift or other VR headset while playing on our simulators to get that true immersive feeling. Sign me up when it is ready.

Everyone does understand that the version of Augusta for PG was created by a user/average Joe and not Perfectparallel right? So you are not really comparing the two pieces of software correctly. Should probably test TPC SawGrass as that is a PP version.

And it would do to point out that the TCG version of Augusta, in fact, was created by an 'average Joe'.

We are comparing 'apples to apples', are we not?

In fairness, The TGC version of Augusta is widely considered one of if not the best courses in the game. I don't know if that is true for PG or if that version of Augusta is even considered to have been done well.

Are there any plans to do an official version of Augusta by PP? If not then this is what needs to be compared. Agree with it or not, however most people will use Augusta as their basis for comparison so I think it is best to put the course people care about the most head-to-head. I do think I posted videos in the past of 17 at Sawgrass on TGC vs. Florida Glades at PG.

The PG aficionados all rave about this course just like the TGC crowd rave about Magnolia so I think it's apples to apples. Both were created by users but both are top class designers. I've played most of the PG courses and this Augusta is one of the best (and one of my favorites).

This is not to say that PP and HB official courses couldn't do better if they set their mind to it.

Huh? Every single real course recreation in TGC is designed by an "average joe" that put countless hours of work in to them, just like the creator did for the PG version. So yes, this is the definition of apples to apples. Both are great in their own distinct ways.

Exactly. A genius idea by HB studios and Perfect Parrallel to just give control of the courses over to the users. Those users certainly haven't disappointed. I just hope this doesn't turn in to a fanboy type deal where it's bickering back and forth about which sim software is better. I have my doubts about that but hopefully everyone will realize that both "sides" are winners and that we're all finally starting to get out from underneath the monopolistic model of outrageous sim software choices of the past.

I love that people are arguing over which absolutely amazing recreation is better. They are both better. Play them. You can't go wrong with either. I even played EA Masters today as a Litmus test. All 3 are the same.

Yeah, I'll say it again. This is an awesome time to be into simulators! Thanks ks-man for posting these great comparisons, and thanks to those that developed the courses for both platforms.

One thing I think about the two (that I don't think has been noted yet) is that the TGC version makes it look like Augusta is located in the Alps. Something about the less-dense trees/bushes and the elevated horizon makes it feel weird to me. The PG version looks more like it is actually in Georgia from that perspective. I also like the fact that the PG version includes the scoreboards, camera towers, etc. Not a huge deal, but it sort of adds to the authenticity in my opinion. If you could magically combine the strengths of the PG and TGC games, you'd have the absolute perfect simulator.

I agree with your comments - and with the other comments about the high quality of both the PG and TGC versions of Augusta. The TGC version has been around for a while, though, and the PG version was just released in beta last week. The PG course will only get better as bugs are found and fixed by the course creators.
