  • Perfect Golf Computer (Video/CPU) requirements

I decided it best to create a new thread on this rather than leave it buried in some comments in the Intro to PG thread.

I have a GTX 970 video card and an I5-6400 cpu which runs TGC great but when running Augusta on PG I'm getting quitee low frame rates. On PG default settings at 1980x1080 full screen, I was getting a lot in the high 20's. Average for the whole course was probably in the low 30s. The 13 tee was 19 fps!

When I examined the GPU and CPU loading on the 13th tee I was surprised to see my 970 was only running about 35% loaded. That typically means the system is CPU limited. Using CPUID HWMonitor my CPU total load was around 50% which didn't seem too bad but I noticed two cores were about 75% and 79% respectively...the others were 50-60%. Values that high can easily be CPU limited (the measurements are software estimates and don't necessary reflect actual saturation limits within the CPU hardware).

At the least it is clear that PG uses the CPU more than TGC does. In fact it appears my system may be CPU limited (not video card limited) which indicates that, while an I5 is fine for TGC, it may not good enough for PG.

I would like to have other people with the 970 video card do this test. Both with I5 and I7s to see if they get different frame rates with the different CPUs (but same 970 video card).

The quick test would be setup the same resolution/quality settings then jump to the 13th tee and record the frame rate and GPU loading.

The exact duplicate of my test (which would give us the best data) is:

    1) Resolution = 1920x1080, Full Screen, Quality settings = Default (ie Ultra High, VSync is off)
    2) Two screens with CPUID HWMonitor simultaneously running on the extended display, PG running on the main screen (If only one screen then PG gets minmized to read the CPU/GPU data which distorts the rresults).
    3) Load Augusta in Practice mode, jump to 13th Tee and measure fps. Mine is 19 fps

NOTE: Once I have everything setup and running I clear the Min/Max values in HWMonitor and then run for a minute or so and record the maximum values for the four cores and gpu.

Either way, tell us the following:
    - frame rate on 13th tee
    - gpu and cpu loading
    - Processor type (ie I5 or I7 and the specific version if you know it)
    - how you did the test

Hopefully we can get a better handle on how Perfect Golf works and what types of systems we need to get good results. It may be that a lesser video card with a better cpu is the way to go for PG. We've gotten used to TGC which is different (In TGC my GPU runs at 99% on all courses while my I5 run around 60% so it is completely video card limited even with an I5).

By the way, this isn't about the Augusta course. It is still beta and probably will get tweaked a bit. It is just a good test to investigate and understand Perfect Golf behaviour.

On a semi related note I just spent 400$ with tax to build a system just to run perfect golf and I run everything at max settings and it seems to run just fine for me. Ive not checked the framerates but honestly everything looks fluid to me, Ill test it out

    Here is my pc specs
    Intel I3 6100 - 105$
    Gigabyte H110M-a -30$
    Radeon R7 360 -105$
    8gig ddr4 ram -35$
    OCZ 120G SSD -40$
Thermal Master case with 500w power supply -39$

As for Augusta I notice it takes pretty much double the time of any other course to load so Im guessing there is a ton of florra it is rendering.

No-one with 970 and i7 wants to do the test for our general edification?

It would be especially useful to compare the fps and gpu loading on an i7 to see how much it improves over i5 (if at all).

It would help people decide if any point spending extra for the i7.

I'd like to know if a 970 is required for PG or if a cheaper alternative will do just as good. I'm in the process of working out what config I need to buy and the GPU in the UK is a killer. Any cheaper radeons do the job or do I really need to spend 50% of my rig on the graphics?

Thanks Torch...we'll get some good data points then!

I've expanded the test to three holes in the below post, hopefully you guys can do all three. That extra holes will provide a better idea about the GPU requirements for those wondering about video cards.

COUPE: I was only focused on the CPU in my tests above but should have considered your question also. To get a feel for the video card requirements people should also test Hole 4 of Augusta and then set VSYNC to ON and test Hole 1 of Florida Glades. All with default settings and full screen 1920x1080.

My results with i5-6400 and 970 are:

Augusta Hole 13 = 19 fps, GPU 35% (cpu limited)
Augusta Hole 4 = 49 fps, GPU 51% (cpu limited)
Florida Glades Hole 1 = 60 fps, GPU 60% (not cpu limited)

If you're happy with maximum 60 fps then the 970 seems overkill. Many people are happy with 30 fps even. Personally, I suspect a 960 would be good. But we'd need people to contribute their test results to know for sure.

GOLFINADICTS: Yours is an interesting set up, i3 with Radeon R7 360. Can you do the standardized test with all three holes and report results? That gives people hard numbers. The problem with "fine" is everyone has their own definition for what that means.

SLEEPING_KING: That systems sounds great to test. I'm eager to see how much better your i7 will perform over the i5.

Remember....if you minimize PG in order to read the GPU/CPU data then you need a tool that shows a history graph since PG runs differently minimized. So you'll have to verify it didn't change or read the graph that applies when PG was running normally. This is most noticeable on the Florida Glades Hole where PG doesn't seem to limit the frame rate to 60 when minimized (so the GPU data gets messed up).

Unless you have a favorite, I'd suggest using Steam for the FPS counter and Geforce Experience to get the GPU load with history graph (buried under My Rig/LED Visualizer/GPU Properties).

Sorry I don't know the equivalent tool for Radeon users. But for people with a secondary display then CPUID HWMonitor works well.

Please remember the test conditions are:
                Resolution 1920x1080
Quality = Default (please hit Default button to be sure)
                Fullscreen (ie not windowed)

And the three test holes are:
                Augusta Hole 13,
                Augusta Hole 4,
Florida Glades Hole 1 with VSYNC=ON

And the results we'd like to see are:
                Frame rate,
                GPU load,
Name of CPU and Video Card under test

NOTE 1: CPU load for each core isn't that important given we have GPU data so only collect if you find it easy.
NOTE 2: GPU data is very important to help those wondering about video cards, so please try to get it.
NOTE 3: If you have a system combination that hasn't been posted yet, then please post. The more info the better to help people see the range of possibilities.

I know it takes effort and time so thanks to everyone who is able to contribute.

Not the test you want, but here is a quick indicator. I'll get the requested data for you this weekend.

                  Augusta Hole 13 = 24 fps
                  Augusta Hole 4 = 60 fps

This is with pg graphics settings maxed out (not default). I7 4790k, strix 970oc. I'll get default numbers for you later.

Google shows the i5 4300 as a mobile CPU? But the Asus 560 ti is a desktop video card. So I'm confused what your system is. A typo or have i looked it up wrong?

                      Great info, thanks Tekbud.

So Hole 13 and 4 are cpu limited, FG #1 is frame rate limited and the 970 gpu is coasting along with power to spare. You results are nicely better than mine basically by the clock speed difference (as one would expect since they are both i5 and cpu limited).

It will be interesting if SleepingKing and Torch i7 results show a similar clock speed relationship or if the i7 does even better due to the i5 >> i7 difference.

And Golfinaddicts i3-6100 test will be very useful since, although only an i3, his 6100 has a fairly high clock speed (but only 2 cores).

Does anyone have a gtx 960 to test? The 970 seems to be overkill (pending SleepingKing and Torch final results). It would be interesting to see if any cpu (i5 or i7) can drive a 960 to become gpu limited.

I bought an Optishot during the winter but I'm not happy with the accuracy. I'm planning to upgrade to a Skytrak and either Perfect Golf or TGC sometime this year. A local computer store has a gaming PC on sale and I'm curious to get other people's opinion on whether this will run Perfect Golf or TGC decently.

                    i7-4790 Processor 3.6GHz
                    8GB DDR3-1600 RAM
                    NVIDIA GeForce GTX960

My projectors native resolution is 1024 x 768 but can run up to 1920 X 1080. I've only run it at 1024 x 768 for now because the laptop I'm using is about 6 years old and this is the maximum resolution that it supports. I see Skytrak recommends a GTX770 for Perfect Golf and a GTX 970 (recommended) / GTX 670 (minimum) for TGC.

When I've compared benchmark ratings, the 960 is about 10% faster than the 670 and 10% slower than the 970.

                    I would appreciate comments.

                    Thanks

Whatever you send to your projector it can only project at it's native resolution. 1920 x 1080 will be downgraded to fit within the 1024 x 768 pixels available to the projector.

That rig can run TGC at 1080p and 50-60 FPS with ease. I have a 960 and it does a great job with TGC. I can't speak for PG as I haven't played it yet.

It's a 2GB card. I'm not sure who made the card though. It was the stock card in an ASUS ROG G20 PC. I wanted to get some feedback before I opened the box. Since everyone thinks it will run fine, I will open the box and see if I can tell who manufactured the card.

Thanks for all of the feedback.

I bought this one due to the fact that it's very small and had no problem fitting it in my smaller case. Based on what I've read, I don't believe there's honestly much of an advantage with the 4 over the 2. I bought the 4GB mainly because Amazon was having a sale and it was actually cheaper than the 2GB card when I bought it. Great card for the money.
