  • Dynamic Handicap Scoring (beta) Feedback

    Hi All,

With the roll-out of the new Skills Assessment, I want to begin to gather some feedback on the beta Dynamic Handicap scoring system. The most important thing here is to take your time and play through the Skills Assessment a lot before offering feedback. Be honest and realistic - not looking for, "I did the assessment once and I got a 19 handicap and I'm a scratch in real life. This sucks!".

A few things to keep in mind:

    - We score every single shot, so you lose your ability to recover as IRL. We do offer the ability to delete shots, but unless it's a total shank (we all have them from time to time), then I'd advise against doing this as it's not a true assessment of your game.

    - The closer the pin, the scoring will seem more aggressive - this is because (similar to above) you can't rely on great putting skills to save you. Where we are looking at yards differentiating scoring increments at long distances, chipping may be mere inches that affect the score. A 1 handicap will sink a 10 foot putt all day long, but that's more a reflection of the putt, not necessarily the shot prior.

    - I will look to expand this assessment for fairways and possibly even putting if the demand is there.

I've run through it about 10 times so far and I'm a 8.4 in real life and so far it has spit out a 10-11 range for me which I feel is pretty close as I haven't been playing great lately. I'm also using it in my basement off a CCE matt and space is cramped height wise so I only had the skills setup for iron shots. I'd have to move it all to the garage to get the driver out. This thing has really shown my weak area which is 60-80 yarders. I think it's very helpful to be able to drill down to each distance and see the HDCP at each distance to see where you are weakest.

    Keep up the excellent work!!

I have been running the iOS prerelease 2.5 for awhile, I have run the skill assessment quite a bit with real ball flight outside. Mostly within 10-100 yards. So my thoughts are biased towards wedge and short game practice. I think it is great. It has shown me where my better distances are and what I need to work on. Not overly concerned with what the score is as a number. I am concerned about improving from each distance over time and tightening my range (see below) . I have run a S.A. where the distance doesn't change but the club or setup does. This has been informative for shots around the green from about 30yards and in so far where a good combo of spin, LA & AofD are factors. So no issues with that. Great job...

Love the four new parameters that have been added. Descent Angle is very important. Thanks

Some of the things that would be helpful down the road.

      - a running dynamic score or trend from each distance/club over time. How are the scores changing over a month, 3 month, etc...?

      - the ability to set a distance range and have random figures to be tested on, scored with the same values as the SA. Ex: set up a session for 40 shots ranging from 35-120 yards. A pop quiz where the distances are unknown until it is time to make the shot. This would be huge for the way I like to practice.

      - Statistically the average is important (Dynamic Handicap). Maybe add a secondary figure with standard deviation that would give a range. I have had very similar DHs reported from very different performance reports. These #'s are just to show the point. This would give an average and a range. I am not a stats guy but I believe shots would fall into this range approx 70% of the time. This would weed out worst and best shots giving what most likely with happen. So leave the shanks in!!!!

Ex: 2 series of 10 shots with a DH of 13.1
      Set #1 Set #2
      Shot 1 9.00 14.00
      Shot 2 12.00 13.00
      Shot 3 32.00 13.00
      Shot 4 20.00 13.00
      Shot 5 1.00 12.00
      Shot 6 (1.90) 13.00
      Shot 7 32.00 13.00
      Shot 8 10.00 13.00
      Shot 9 9.00 13.00
      Shot 10 8.00 14.00
      DYNAMIC HANDICAP 13.11 13.10
      Standard Dev 11.57 0.57
      LOW RANGE 1.54 12.53
      HIGH RANGE 24.68 13.67

SkyTrak_Seth is the intention at some point to allow this to hook up with the GT1/2 GameTracker as well to feed IRL data to the practice arena? This would be way, way cool and would blow anything else available away. I know that SkyPro integration is planned, but GameTracker would be phenomenal. This could feed in playing handicap as well as dynamic. Then you have the ability to look at shots gained analysis too.
Im getting very excited about the possibilities, is this on GE roadmap???

I will be using it a lot more but the couple times that I have it scored me around a 20hdcp which is about right.

I think the handicap scoring is close enough to my real-life handicap. But most importantly it allows one to see which distances you're weak at and need to work on.

I have to say kudos to SkyTrak - this thing is just getting better and better everyday.

I agree. It is more important that the number improves and dispersion gets tighter vs. it says I am a 19.

For me, and imagine most people here unless you have no family/friends/clients that use this, you really need to have multiple users for the skills assessment. Otherwise all the tracking over time gets thrown off if other users are participating.

Currently you select the # of distances, the distances themselves, and the # of shots at each distance. I would like it if it "randomly changed" distance after each shot. the algorithm seems to require 3 shots at a distance to work, but if it didn't I would like to see the same random mode inside a selected range an a total number of shots. The dynamic handicap range could then be graphed to shot ups and downs.

Fairways sound great. I'm a huge fan of what you have done here. The dynamic hdcp is very important and at the same not important at all for it to match my golfing hdcp. I'm looking to improve my game so it's just a number for me to gauge upon. Kudos ST!!!!!!

If your looking for it to match your gaming hdcp, try best 3 of 5 shots. That seems to get my dynamic hdcp to = golfing hdcp.

I have been running the Skills Assessment a couple times per week since the release. Usually from 20-80 yards or so. My dynamic handicap has been trending lower overall. I have had a few that have been single digits for all distances. I typically will go 8-10 shots at each distance. Thanks for adding this feature. It has really kept my interest vs. just beating balls. Would love a feature to have ST give random distances between a predefined range & score a dynamic handy cap on that. 10 targets between 50-100 yards...as an example.

Overall i love the skills assessment and dynamic handicap. I usually set it to 4 shots with only the best 3 counting.

I find the dynamic handicap to be very accurate. Nice job.
