  • I tested SkyTrak vs Trackman today

    Hi guys,

I got my skyTrak units today which was exciting and even moreso was to compare it against trackman head to head on the same ball, same conditions etc. I will do proper review videos like Cory from par2pro and post it on my YouTube with a link here over the next few days. but the short version of the results... it's VERY good. considering a trackman costs 10 times SkyTrak... wow.

More to come soon, but one thing I found was... with SkyTrak you MUST use tour balls - distance balls (whch I buy cheap and use on my simulators) gave sub 2500 backspin rates on 8 irons!

    cheers

without doing any tests vs other launch monitors I am happy with the skytrak. My path of the ball and distance is very close to real life. I look forward to your tests. Wish Ilved near you would enjoy helping you out with the tests.

I actually did a ball test for a friend of mine and used a variety of different balls - 10 different to be exact - and some were tour style balls and others were cheap balls including a Nitro ball which has to be the cheapest ball made :-). Results were interesting. I did the test hitting five shots with each ball with a driver, 8-iron and 58-degree wedge. I did the driver and 58 test using the assessment screen, but did the 8-iron on the regular SkyTrak range. If anyone is interested in seeing the results just let me know. I think I still have them.

Would like to see as well. In the mean time can you give an executive review?

really interested also, especially about the balls that worked best for the simulator I have looked all over the place on the forum on what type of ball is best for reading results plus what ball does least amount of damage to impact screen all i have seen is do not use the proV1 as people have damaged there screen with it still trying to figure that one out.

Send me emails to coachjwj at gmail if you would like to see the #s and I'll send you the PDF reports. Again I have driver, 8iron and 58 degree. Let me know if you want all three or individual reports. They are 6MB files, so I don't think I can post them on here.

Are you stating your SkyTrak is reporting spin rates less than 2500 with an 8i???

And what is the trackman reporting in this case?

I've used various distance-oriented balls on SkyTrak and never got anything close to as low as 2500 with an 8i, unless it was a skulled shot. I use mostly mid-range priced balls, and don't see a problem with it.

Something is not right, I get in the low 6000s hitting and indoor plastic ball that is definitely on the low spin side compared to even a distance ball

Yes so ST was reading 2500 or so backspin for 8i shots yes. However, changed balls to tour version and spin was within 100 of Trackman. You gotta remember that Trackman estimates the spin indoors as well, it's not measured (indoors!). Once, say a Prov1, was used... numbers between trackman and skytrak were within 2 yards for 150y shots, shape was right on 8/10 shots... on a few I saw a fade on trackman and a draw on skytrak. Could be alignment. Will post videos next few days.

Track man will indeed measure spin indoors when a foil dot is on the ball.

It does not measure spin axis indoors.

Yes you're right re the dot. I have some actually... forgot to put them on to try to see difference in results. Need to come up with a good testing methodology

Something is wrong if you're getting sub 2500 back spin on an 8i.

Seems that is what his Skytrak is measuring though. Unless you're suggesting his skytrak is getting it wrong. I wouldn't be quick to blame the skytrak though. I've had 8i producing 2500-3000 bs on cheap balls then switched to prov1 and it jumps to 7 or 8k.

(That's probably why impact screens last longer with cheap balls compared to using prov1s.)

Also his club face may not be in the best shape or he simply isn't swinging hard enough.

By the way testing was done by a pro that qualified for Chambers Bay last year so it's not a question of swing. Balls do make a huge difference. Cheap shit balls get low spin numbers and pro v1 get within 100 rpm of trackman.
