Performance difference with same ball type?

Anyone ever have a dud ball in a sleeve or notice a dramatic difference between a ball of same make?

I was just on range working on a swing change and also just opened up a new sleeve of balls (prov1 which I always use). Thought I finally discovered the secret to distance as all my shorter irons up to 7 iron had at least 10 - 15 yds extra. Then noticed all my spin was extremely low and shots were impacting much differently. Switched ball back to an old prov1 I had been using and back to same old distances with much higher spin rates.

Oh well, it was a nice feeling for 30 min or so thinking I had those extra few yds.

I have noticed that about 5-10 hits prior to a ball splitting its cover, it starts to perform very poorly. But have not seen any problems with a brand new ball.

And sometimes it's very difficult to find a crack as well. But you can clearly tell based on readings. Usually it will really split on the next hit though.

I played part of the Shiners Tournament with a ball that cracked. I was losing ball speed by approx 20 MPH. I tend to play with one ball over and over. I should rotate them out.

Going to experiment with several balls from different sleeves later today. One thing I just remembered is I did buy a "new" case of prov1s off of Craigslist a few months back. Wonder if I got duped with some knock-offs?

Cool thing on Sim is you can immediately notice spin rate and distance variations. IRL it's harder to pin point those differences. Now that I think back, I was using a few balls from that same batch on the course and wondered why my balls where not spinning on greens. I just figured greens were harder with cold weather.

Yup looks like every prov1 ball I bought out of my Craigslist deal has extremely low spin. They all have spin rates of an NXT or something equivalent. Oh well guess that's what I get for trying to find a deal. It's crazy though, you wouldn't be able to tell a difference with packaging, ball logos etc...
