    Unit not reading chips well

Been along time since i was on this forum and I did a quick search but not exhaustive so pardon if this question has been answered. I have not used my unit for quit a while as I spent my time outdoors, but now that winter is setting in I have updated to the latest software, and started hitting indoors again. Have always had my unit both the first one and the warranty replacement model not read chips very well. Playing some of the sims it gets quit frustrating, anyone have any ideas if there is maybe some sort fix for this, I have tried different balls and ball placement and not found the magic solution for this. sometimes it reads first shot sometimes it takes like 6 shots?

Which sim are you using? I am assuming this is for SkyTrak. Have you updated to the latest ST firmware?

Yeah I updated to the latest firmware, and renewed subscription to Skytrak and to the Perfect Golf package. Everything is working great with the exception of the chip reads, about anything inside 80+ yards has issues, shorter the yardage the harder it seem for the unit to pick up, Like if I am out say 20 to 30 yards, its darn frustrating trying to get the unit to register a chip. Sometimes it registers on the first swing other it may take 6 or more, so by the time it actually reads I am no longer really hitting well out of frustration.

Since I miss a fair amount of green in regulation I do a lot of chipping, so by the time you get to 9 holes your ticked off enough you quit, never have completed an 18 hole round. And if I play with a frreind or 2 with the chipping issues between all of us it feels like we played 18 after only 9 with all the rehitting.

I read somewhere else where someone said they hit shorter shots that elevate more quickly with the ball a touch forward of the dot. I don't have any idea if that is a viable solution as I don't have my ST yet.

Does the shot register in the skytrak software on their range? If so, you can eliminate the unit being an issue and it's possibly an issue with the perfect golf software.

My chips seem to read very accurately but yesterday I hit a second shot into a greenside bunker and proceeded to hit at least 8 shots in a row that wouldn't read. I had to just concede the hole and start the next one. I don't know what I would do if it was during a tournament round

I have tried moving the ball around the laser dot in all directions whit no real luck at resolving. I too thought the angle might be the issue to some degree as for the short shots the ball is coming off the club very steep.

No I have not tried chip through the skytrak software only in the sim software but I sure can give a whirl and see what happens

They also have a dynamic evaluation where you can setup 10 shots and see how well you score. You could do it in 10 yard increments starting at like 20 yards and see how well it reads there also.

Another great suggestion. Pay attention to how far the ball carries vs overall. The ball stops very quickly in my opinion within the ST app on range/challenges & Skill Assessment. TGC is pretty realistic for roll out for the most part.

That is a good point and I thought of this also, but in reality I stink so bad in real life I don't enter tournaments anyway

You will love the Tournaments. They are a blast. I feel silly grinding it out in my basement... But I DO. If you are positive it was a bogus read there is the possibility to rewind the shot (Mulligan). I think I have had one on a negative launched 3w in 10 tourney rounds.

BogeyMan I agree with wbond .. If SkyTrak works for chips in the skytrak app it is probably an issue within PG.. I have only played TGC so I am unaware of PG issues.

Jwheels9876 - Did you have any further issues with TGC after you conceded that hole and moved on? Typically if there is an issue with ST it is a no read vs a misread. I have had a few negative launch angles, a few no reads on 3w, some putts but that is about it.

teamacacia - That is a possible solution to a high pitch shot/flop but a chip depending how low a launch angle could actually be behind the dot as well. It is about capturing the ball within the cameras view.

Also make sure your ST is within tolerance for level. Bubble level and with in the ST app.

No, I skipped the hole and continued to play without issue but it just wouldn't read that shot from the bunker no matter how many times I tried

Does anyone have further tips on getting high lofted chips to register? I struggled with this today.

Looks like I should maybe check to make sure it is level. Hitting forward of the dot seemed to help a touch but it still struggled.

I usually hit 2" in front of the dot on flops (toward the screen) and maybe an inch or so closer to me (away from the unit)

Yeah just like any camera the further away the bigger the view. Just can't get too far or you'll get bad missreads or no read. Usually when the laser goes out and it doesnt show a shot I figure it had too much loft for the second camera too see it so I know I need to move it ahead a touch.
                    Working...
