  • Skytrak Armour

Ok, I'm starting this thread to see if protecting the Skytrak box is still a must for some people.

I have read countless posts on this subject and generally feel that this is a need for users. I have owned the Skytrak for a couple of months and agree for the most part. Honestly, it doesn't seem an issue for myself, however I couldn't possibly let my kids, favorite friends, or even a touring pro use it without completely freaking out!!!

My question is this. Is this a need for users that still exists for a reasonable enough amount of people?

I am a manufacturing engineer and have all the available information and software to develop a legit protective case that can make the Skytrak bulletproof. I can integrate leveling devices, locating devices, and alignment aids into the case. Basically whatever a user wants.

I can have these produced at a reasonable cost and shipped to a user. This is what I can do.

I have a desire to this, have started on a prototype for myself, but am really looking for more interest than personal use. Time is a huge motivator for me as I'd rather be hacking away on the TGC. LOL!

If you are interested, please PM me or just reply to this thread so I can get an idea of the need.

Disclaimer: yes I have the Davray sketch and will use some of that information in whatever design I come up with. My plan would be to optimize and improve overall function of whatever case I come up with. I see location, leveling, protection, and consistency of setup being the utmost importance.

      • Played 9 holes magnolia for test and then played my second round of TGC tourney for the week. 27 holes and no non reads and no bad reads. Pretty stoked about that. Really falling in love with the case now.

You can check my shot recording on the tourney round. All the error is mine, sad to say. Despite swinging like a moron had it going till 15. That hole killed me all week. Snapper OB left was all me. Lol!

        • Latest picture with second coat of army green and leveling feet added. Cheap elevator feet that you can get at any hardware store and locking nuts. I'm actually loving the army green and am hoping the black oxide looks as good. What do you guys think?

That looks awesome! Only thing I notice is that the cutout for the ball position laser looks slightly off-center but that could be the camera angle. Gary, I did have one question. Have you thought about putting a thin piece of rubber between the bottom of the skytrak and the armored case? Might be me over-engineering but I was thinking of dampening the shock of a ball that is shanked into the case. Even though the metal would protect the case from the impact, the shock would transfer and could be enough to affect / harm the electronics. Just a thought and a detail that I don't believe any other cases have taken into account.

Good eye 93civiccpe - my ball position aperture is slightly offset in my case. Probably less than .030". The pic does look worse than real life. However, that is due to the poor manufacturing that i've been dealing with the last couple of days. The changes that I've made to the design are directly related to that issue.

For my proto case, I had welds on the inside of the enclosure that have been killing me. I have engineered that error out of future cases. I will post a picture of my base related to these changes. There will be no dremil use on production cases. I'm going for maximum adjustability. If you know about "competitors" case, they are dealing with similar issues right now.

As far as shock, mass damping is all I have. Thick heavy steel has to absorb the shock. From there, shock will work thru the metal inserts in the bottom of the plastic ST box. Hard for me to say how much could move to the smart parts of the ST box. It's an issue, for sure, and I've advised people to mechanical lock at their own risk. All I can say, my case has the most mass damping available. I'm actually very comfortable locking mine in.

        • Any strikes on the case yet? Wondering how the ST will fare when hit by an errant shot?

          • You need some hackers testing too. You must be a pretty good stick!

Lol! I'm far from a stick. It's sad the anxiety that I have playing a virtual round of tournament golf. Lol! Fist pumping a 9 foot par putt. Terrible.

I won't willingly hit the case with the ST in it. Sorry I can't do it. I'm accepting test Skytraks for testing though. Lol!

I did take off the ST lens today to check alignments. The window is as optimized as I can get it.

          • I would prefer black oxide for the paint.

          • DirtyGarry24 I'm guessing I know the answer to this question, but was wondering if the base was a different piece than the face/unit and if so if it'd be possible to just order the face/unit without the base. My reasoning being the 3/8" thickness would require to change lots of things in my setup to adjust for the added height of the SkyTrak. If not no big deal, just thought I'd ask as it would save me loads of time redoing my setup to adjust for the added height. Thanks!

          • Thanks to DoubleBarrelLefty I'm quite sure I can reduce shipping charges through USPS. I'm going to talk to them today and see what I can do. Anyone having already paid for shipping will be reimbursed any difference. Hopefully the cheaper shipping can push us over the hump to get an order started.

I'm learning a lot throughout this process.

cool, glad I could help everyone save some money and you probably make more sales. My family sells quoits (lol google them) and 4 of them are 16 lbs (poor mailman prolly hates them). They fit fine in the medium flat rate box so I figured your case would be a good fit too.
