E6 1.7 questions (Wind, Elevation, Lie) with Skytrack

Been away from my sim for a few months with an injury. Just came back and updated the e6 connect to 1.7.1. It looks like in the patch notes that Wind and Course elevation now work with E6 and Sky? Can someone confirm these do in fact work? Are the results similar to Skytrack elevation? I live in Denver so, I do keep my skytrack elevation to a 5280. E6 I believe always played at sea level, and I could definitely tell the difference. Played a high elevation course last night and was crushing the ball.

Also, looks like they added a terrain penalty gauge. I am seeing what appears to be two gauges, Power and Spin. Are terrain penalties now working in E6 with Skytrack or are these useless to me?

If so, how do they read. I was in a bunker and it looked like the power gauged was about 80%, but then I was just on the fringe and it read at like 20%, seems counter intuitive, unless the red bar shows how much the shot will be dampened as opposed to total power of the shot (if that makes sense).

I just downloaded 1.7 couple days ago and realized this as well. I did try taking the elevation up cause I was always a little short with clubs before. PW 105-110, 8I-135) I set elevation to 5500ft and I was pretty close to hitting irons to what I normally hit them. (PW-120, 8I-150) I haven't had much time to test other setting yet but since it is going to be crappy weather her in PA for next 5 days I will test others.
Here is what was in release nots for 1.7 about skytrak.
    • Added a Terrain Penalty gauge under the Top View. If the Terrain Penalty option is enabled, the gauge will show the active penalty on the shot’s power and spin, if any, based on the ball’s terrain/lie.
    • Integrations – SkyTrak: Enabled Wind and Elevation, which will now affect ball flight. The Settings are now available in the Environment tab. Modified the Post Shot Menu.

TruGolf tells me that the power bar graph is showing the percentage of power loss, not the percentage of power remaining. So having the bar 80% across would take 80% off the shot carry (seems reasonable for a bunker shot).

Thanks, Ron. That would seem to fit. I was in a bunker and the bar was about 75-80% red, and in the rough was maybe 15% red. Does anyone know if this is actually working with skytrack, or are we just seeing the bars for nothing? I only played one round, and somehow, only found one bunker. It felt dampened, but not 80% dampened.

That is what confused me. Seems clear that wind and elevation are working, and from what I can tell, they are. I played the Wolf Creek Par 3 mountain course, and definitely felt like the balls were going further at elevation. It could also be that I was feeling better. I took 2 months off for an elbow injury, and do also feel like I am hitting it a bit further than I was, which is why I just wanted to double check.

The Addition of the terrain penalty gauge is the real question. I know previously that lie penalties didn't work in skytrack. This doesnt mention them working now, just a gauge being added. Perhaps only useful with certain launch monitors? If anyone can confirm whether lie penalties work with skytrack, I would be grateful. I suppose I could just go drop a virtual bucket of balls in the sand and try to test, but would still appreciate if someone actually knows.

I tried the terrain penalty gauge for a few holes. It works with skytrak. But when in rough power is about 10%-15% and 50% spin didn't notice too much yardage taken off maybe 5-10 yards at the most with 9I and 8I. I was in Tall grass as well once it said about 40% did take a few more yards off. When I was on cart path it took about 60% was very noticeable and like Ron says above from the sand traps at least 80% power very noticeable.

I played a round today with Skytrak and had a few times where the power bar was at 80% reduction (tall grass) and it didn’t seem to be taking off 80% of distance. I hit a 5 iron almost 175 yards which is close to my normal distance with that club.

I played about 6 rounds since making this post. I honestly don't think the lie penalties do anything with Skytrack in E6 Connect. Every now and then, they seem to come out soft out of a bunker, but I think that could just as easily be a misread on the shot or that there was a big elevation change because the bunker was deep, so it doesnt go as far as your would expect. Lie Penalty or not, you still need to play to the terrain of the shot. In rough, I cant tell a difference when the power gauge is around 20% dampened. In tall grass, sometimes you here the ball impact the grass in front of you and that definitely dampens the shot, but I think that is a different phenomenon. Have yet to hit off a cart path since the update.

Shame there seems to be no way to get an official response on this. I know lie penalties in e6 work with some launch monitors, but specifically did not work with skytrack prior to 1.7.1. My best guess is that the lie penalty gauge when using skytrack is meaningless since the patch notes didnt specifically mention skytrack support when they made the update. Would love to be corrected if I am wrong.

Not sure if you are saying you want to know if the cart path update works or not, but there is a video on GSV YouTube where he hits a cart path at Jeremy Ranch (I think) and the ball takes quite the bounce.

Team support has told me that power bar shouldn’t be displayed for skytrak. this is their answer:

“SkyTrak does not respect the E6 CONNECT Terrain Penalties.
I would consider this a bug---that a SkyTrak users should not have to see this, since this feature does not work with Skytrak at this time.

I will get this in front of our Development team.
Thank you for reaching out about this”

That is my conclusion after a month or so of playing. I think the meter is just there for show in skytrak, bug might be the best term. I don't think it does a thing. Every now and then it does seem to come out of the sand soft, but I think that is just skytrak not always reading short chips and such appropriately. I am ignoring it at this point.

                      Thanks for the response!

I too have noticed balls coming out of the sand VERY soft. More than skytrak not reading the chip correctly. It is odd. But then ill go and hit one a bit harder and it flies 20 yards over the green. I avoid sand traps at all cost I cannot figure it out at all

The thing I have noticed with greenside sand traps is that there can be a lot of elevation change between them and the hole. This has caused me to be confused at times with difference in result even though I have hit similar shots. However, when I have paid attention to the elevation change it seems to have helped.

Ron, can you edit your excellent Gunghogolf buyer’s guide for E6 and TGC2019 to clarify that the terrain penalty effect does not work for SkyTrak? That is a pretty substantial point against E6 in my opinion. The way it reads now, it implies that the February update added terrain penalties and not just wind & elevation.
