Could someone explain how this setting works, what exactly it does, and what settings do most people use?

What setting is more realistic. I am just starting out on ProTee but it appears to me that the swing variations are much more severe than in real life. I am a 12 handicap and a fairly straight hitter. My distances seem to be close but like I said, I either hit in the center of the fairway or 50 to 75 yards to left or right....much more variation than in real life.
What should I be looking at in the setup to tweak?
So, in ProTee, would 0 forgiveness be the most realistic?Comment

Gene there is a setting in the interface. I have to look at it when I get home. But it says beginner intermediate and professional .. I have mine set at 20 % just when it changes from professional to intermediate and it seems to be the most realistic.. I will let you know exactly where to find it and whet I have it onComment

Ok Gene, correction I have mine set at 30 % forgiveness and it right where professional ends and intermediate starts. Ive had this setting since after the first week I've had it and it's pretty consistent. I'm a 4 handicap and it's pretty spot on. I'm amazed how when I play real golf how cosistant the ball flight is with the sim. Now granted bunkers and the rough is going to be different because you hit off the same lie all the time on the sim. But normal shots and tee shot it's pretty true. The factory setting is 0 forgiveness which is professional mode and yes if yur slightly off it will amplify your miss hits.. So try it at 30% and you should do well with that ... It works well for me at 30.. good luck..Comment

Also if you want to change the ball height and carry distance you can go to the ball settings and adjust the drag and the lift accordingly.. the drag will either make your ball go further or shorter and the lift will make it go higher or lower. I changed mine slightly as well to accodimate my exact distances I hit on the course and trajectory as well. That's a pretty nifty setting option as well. Outside of those three things, forgiveness ball drag and lift I don't touch any of the other settings... I leave the rest at default.Comment

I agree with your settings....I'm about a 8 handicap and fairly consistent ball striker. For me, I found that the forgiveness below 30% just puts too much penalty on slightly wayward shots. I don't know if you contribute that to my using fairly new and forgiving clubs in real life, etc. but it was a major difference in trying to match the sim to my real golf shots. I actually changed the ball drag on my irons to .97 to get my iron distance right but had to go to 1.04 on my driver to tone it down some because it was consistently 10-15 yds further than in real life.
But other than that, I believe I have it dialed in pretty good. I am still trying to adjust to chipping and putting, but I will concentrate on that next.
Got my side panels up last night and now only need to clean up, straighten everything out, and then I will take some photos tonight and post. Very happy with everything so farComment

I've got my forgiveness set at 30% and I am still having issues with tee shots going crazy right? My miss on the actual course is usually a pull so to watch my ball rocket 50 yards right is a mystery. After that my fairway woods, irons and wedges seem to be close?Comment

So is the consensus 30% forgiveness? I've been using 0% for 2 years now, and will have to admit that hitting fairways is difficult. Has anyone compared different forgiveness setting vs GC2 or Skytrak?Comment

I played around with the forgiveness setting with my ProTee just recently. I changed it to 0 and also tried it at most forgiving. I can honestly say that I didn't notice any difference. Maybe my change in the settings file didn't take, but I hit shots on the range and didn't see any change in the flight path represented.
There's really nothing to stop you from doing you're own experiment and adjusting the setting and trying to find the difference.
I put mine back to 30% I believe, and I can't hit the fairway either. Don't think it's the arrow, I think its the archer.Comment

There was a noticeable difference, primarily that the club path always showed 'straight' until I deliberately shot one into the bushes to see what what going on. That registered as being extreme. For a moment it had me believing that all my work on fixing the club path had paid off!
As far as I could tell the 100 % setting acts to lessen how rigorously ProTee processes the club path data. If you are 'near' a straight club path that's what shows up on the screen in 'beginner' mode. So there most definitely is an effect to changing the forgiveness setting, at least for ProTee.
I set mine back to 30%, which I believe is the default, and my shot shapes, unfortunately. were back to my 'normal'.
