  • New computer build...GPU advice needed

I have built many computers, but have never played TGC or JNPG. I am getting ready to order components and could use some advice. I have read over many of the threads on here and have come up with the following components:

    i5-7500
    240 GB SSD
    550W 80 Plus Gold PSU
    16 GB DDR4 2400
    B250 motherboard

Please let me know if anything is inadequate or overkill.

I am a bit torn on the GPU. It seems like a GTX 1060 w/6GB may suffice, but if a GTX 1070 or GTX 1080 would make a difference then I would go with one of them. I will be running a projector at 1080p, so no need for 4K at this point. I don't like throwing money away, but don't have a problem spending it if it will improve my experience. The 1060 is around $240, 1070 $400, and 1080 $500. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

The 6GB GTX 1060 is the best bang for the buck. After that you are really getting to the point of diminishing returns. Most people will be hard pressed to notice the difference between the 1060 and 1080. I went from the 970 to 980ti ( which is a similar jump) and I would not advise the upgrade. I had some extra poker money to burn at the time. Next time that I win big at poker, The GTX 1080ti will be calling and I should really resist this time.

Thanks for the advice. That's what I kind of figured, but it's good to hear from someone that has some experience. It sounds like the GTX 1060 will get me through a couple of years and then I can evaluate the 4k projector scene. At that point I can upgrade the card if I go to 4K.

I second the 1060 being more than enough to push this at High settings and 60+ FPS. I have a 1060 in one machine and a 970 in another and the difference is <5 FPS difference on most all courses. My advice....find a cheap 970 and once you go 4K then can upgrade.

I personally use a GTX980TI and built a PC with a GTX1060Mini w6gb for my old man. Both have similar CPU's and both run TGC very well. Honestly I wouldn't be able to tell you which GPU is faster or better when it comes to graphics quality visually. Both are great however the 1060 has no where near the PSU wattage requirements so I would recommend going with the 1060.

Did an almost identical build myself. I ended up going for the 1070, but only in case TGC2 needs a little more horse power. Not sure if it will or not, but didn't want to risk it for a little more than a hundred bucks difference.

Agree with others on 1060 6GB
