  • automatic swing recording and slow motion playback with kinovea

I figured I should start a new topic because the other thread has gotten a little long and confusing. Primarily I don't want anyone to think I am using ps3eye cameras for a dual recording setup. i've had a couple of people contact me after purchasing two ps3eyes cameras, asking how to get them working with the dual recording script. while you can get it to work, it is not easy to do. If you are looking to do a 2 camera setup, skip the ps3eye cameras. I would recommend the OV2710 usb cameras from eBay that will do 100fps at 640x480 (does not do 120fps as advertised). There are many lens options and what works for you will depend on how far away you will be placing the cameras. These run at around $40-50.

If you are looking for a very cheap 1 camera setup the ps3eye is great. Picture quality and frame rate aren't the best and getting 2 to work in kinovea is a pain but they cost less than $10.

you can run one ps3eye and one OV2710 camera together. i did this for a few months. in this video the ps3eye cam is on the right and the OV2710 is on the left. you can see that the ps3eye is grainy and at 60fps, it is not great but does the job. in addition to a sharper picture and increased fps, another reason I ended up getting two OV2710 cameras is because with one video at 60fps and one at 100fps I couldn't sync the videos up.

Here is what it looks like using 2 of the OV2710 cameras.

the way it all works is based around kinovea's live delay feature. if you set the delay to 3 seconds, whatever the cameras see in real time shows up on screen 3 seconds later. if you only want to see your swing once, in real time, you could just run kinovea on a second monitor and set the delay to suit your needs. my autoit script automates the recording and playback process. the sound of impact triggers the script which starts and stops the recordings in kinovea, then opens the recordings in vlc. this means that two 6-7mb files are created every time you hit a ball, so you do need to watch your disk space. it works great for me and a few others here on this forum. before I did this, I took a lot of videos with my phone and while the video quality on any modern phone or tablet is far superior to the OV2710 cameras, it is so much more convenient this way.

what you need to run a two camera setup is the following:
a good computer (if it can run tgc smoothly, you should be ok)
    2 cameras (either 1 ps3eye and 1 OV2710 or 2 OV2710's)
    active usb extension cable
    audiozonetrigger https://www.zonetrigger.com/sound-detection/
    microphone
kinovea version 0.8.15 (other versions will not work)
    vlc media player
    my autoit script

the software is free except for audiozone trigger with costs $25. for hardware costs, you have 2 cameras at $50 each, a microphone for $10, and a usb active extension for $10, so all in $145.

I was just having a similar problem with one camera using the beta version. Changing the resolution made the camera start working again, then you can just change it back.

    • I’m getting ready to pull the trigger on two cameras, however I have a few questions:
In post #118, inorkuo recommended the Kayeton black and white global shutter 120fps usb camera (KYT-U100-GS2ML) and Reiner the color version (KYT-U100-GS1ML). Is there a performance difference between these two in relation to cpu /graphics card overhead, lighting conditions, blurring, etc, or just preference?

And if I understand correctly the Kinovea 0.9.1 comes with its own audio trigger and the ability to run two instances of kinovea making the need for audiozonetrigger and VLC obsolete?

Is there a limit to the active usb extension cable length one should avoid?

      Any help would be appreciated!
      Thanks

      • I bought the Kayeton black and white global shutter 120fps usb camera and the OV2710. The Kayeton is far superior for slow motion swing playback. I ordered it from Amazon and they estimated a 5-6 week wait. I had it in less than 2. I would definitely get this one.

I use a 15ft USB extension cable from Amazon and there are no issues.

Yes Kinovea does all of this now

Does anyone have a comment on the Black and White vs Color question?

          • Hi Guys! My simulator desktop died yesterday... just wondering what I should be getting for a mother board and processor to run Kinovea as well as TGC2019? Really want to record my swings these days... I keep my desktop in my basement and swing in my garage (I live in Canada so it gets pretty cold) and I use active repeating cables with a USB powered hub in my garage and my PS3 and OV2710 cameras are VERY inconsistent in working unfortunately... not in recording... just in working. Probably a different topic but thought I'd mention it here on the off chance. Thanks!

            • Before I give up on this: has anyone had any luck getting PS3 Eye to read at its proper specs in Kinovea 9.1 beta? Can't get it above 60FPS on mine even though CL-Eye sees it properly as 187FPS

Click image for larger version Name:	ps3.jpg Views:	0 Size:	27.4 KB ID:	267679

It's fine in 8.15, but no audio trigger with that one.

The driver from CL-Eye is 32 bit only, check message #120 of this discussion there is a link to another driver that works for 64 bit programs.

Hi, thanks to all for this geat thread. I use the driver for 64 bit programs, but still can´t get the PS3 Eye to work at 187 fps in Kinovea 0.9.3 (max. is 60 fps). Could anyone solve this?

            • Hey all

been using the OV7210 cameras on my fsx setup for a while now. I have been having issues with them losing connection or showing just a black image for almost the whole
              time I’ve owned them.

I will hit refresh and disconnect then and reconnect them physically. Sometimes the image comes back and records fine for a while then I lose it.

I am using a powered usb extension for one of the cameras and both are plugged in to an external usb splitter and the. In to the gaming laptop.

im sure that some of what I described above may be causing some of this but even when I go direct connection to the laptop the connection is spotty and questionable at best.

any advice or experience with this out there???

              best

              adam

This will prevent dropped frames due to low light etc. It will send the full 100 fps to Kinovea - Although the delay buffer in Kinovea 8.27 will only accept 64 of the 100fps when running the AutoIt script with microphone trigger.
It seems that the fixed frame rate software files are too big (17MB) to attach on the forum (<1MB). Unless someone knows where I could post a link to these larger files (not my Google Drive), send me a private message with your email.

                • Does anyone happen to know if an IDS UI-3130LE-C-HQ camera will work with Kinovea? The software appears to recognize it, but the picture is blank.

I've had my Skytrak for years and I've always wanted a GolfTec like setup at home.
I can't believe I never found this thread!

On that note, I'm in the same boat. I'm trying to decide if I should go with KYT-U100-GS2ML (Black and white) vs KYT-U100-GS1ML (color)

                    Decisions decisions....

                    • Greetings

I have been using the code supplied for by Inorko with two 2710s - this worked well.
I have now upgraded to Kinovea 9.1 and have run into a few snags and the only way I can get both cameras to work is two have 2 instances of Kinovea running at the same time.
                      I have 2 questions.

Q1. Have other members had a similar issue?
Q2. Do you use a third Instance of Kinovea for the Playback?

                      Comment

                      • Yes, 1 instance for each camera and a 3rd with 2 Replay Observers is the way to go.

                        • Hey Everyone,

This is a great topic, i have been looking for a setup like this for a while now.

So i got everything that was recommended, see below, and I am having a couple of issues with this setup

Issue 1: I can only run 1 OV2710 and the mic or 2 OV2710 and no mic. for some reason i can't run all 3 together.

Issue 2: the audiozonetrigger doesn't start the script to record the swing. I can manually hit record, take a couple of swings, then manually stop the recording and it works but it doesn't work the way is is supposed to.

                          any ideas??

                          Recommended Equipment.

                          2 cameras ( 2 OV2710's)
                          active usb extension cable
                          audiozonetrigger
                          microphone
kinovea version 0.8.15 (other versions will not work)
                          vlc media player

You might want to try a USB able that is powered by an electrical outlet. I keep my computer in my basement and simulator in the garage. I recently switched to a UsB 3.0 cable that plugs in in my garage, connected it to a powered USB hub, and my 2 cameras and microphone work most of the time. If not, a reboot of the computer fixes things usually. 😀

                        • This thread is basically obsolete. Use the latest version of kinovea which has all this built in now.
