  • Costco for $1,000 - good deal?

    CyberPowerPC Xtreme Gaming Desktop
    • 10th Gen Intel® Core™ i5-10400F Processor at 2.9GHz
    • 6GB NVIDIA GeForce® RTX 2060 Graphics
    • 500GB PCIe NVMe M.2 Solid State Drive
    • USB Gaming Keyboard + USB 7 Colors RGB Gaming Mouse
    • Air Cooled

I keep hearing I can save a ton by building myself. Just wondering how much I can save over this setup. Looks like a decent deal for $1k.
Also, if/when I wanted/needed to upgrade to, say, a 3070 card, no problem swapping it out, correct?

    Thanks!

I'm going to say... Not good deal. Just wait. Either 3000 GPU's or AMD's new offering. As for swapping, I doubt it. you would need to know what the PSU output is and you are going to need at least a 650w PSU and a lot of reviewers are saying that the 3000 GPU's seem to have some high power demands. Building is cheaper always, however, right now nothing is available in the new GPUs... So you need to balance when you need/want this, vs what you are willing to pay. I do know that a couple vendors do have 3000 series available in their pre-builts.

VRLA is offering a prebuilt with a 3070 for only $1,400, which I have to add here, is right around the same price as what it would cost to build it yourself... Maybe $100-$150 more...

Also what launch monitor are you going for?

If you are using the desktop for only golf sim then that desktop with that graphics card will be plenty fast enough for 1080p projector.
As for a quick comparison on if it's a good deal, you could look at slickdeals or similar internet price comparison site to see if it's a decent buy.

If you want to go all out for 4k graphics and future proof as much as possible then the 3080 or 6900xt graphics cards are the way to go. You'll need to wait till next year before those gpu cards are in decent supply.

Jtangm04, sorry I meant to post on the one below... I'm not disagreeing with you.

I would disagree here. 4K TGC2019 is way better than the 1080p... The reason you would wait and get a 3000 series or an AMD variant, is that the generational leap forward is well over 30% performance gains. I mean, their 3070 (MSRP$500) is comparable to the 2080Ti ($1,500) Its a no brainer. You are not going to see this kind of a significant increase in graphics performance for years!

Additionally, look at some of the new simulator programs out there... They are limited by the engines and technology that run them... On a parallel but slightly unrelated topic, look at Microsoft Flight Simulator... Its breathtaking how absolutely accurate the renders are and the amount of shading, detail, and cached backgrounds... Running in 1440p it absolutely cripples a Titan GPU... Buy a 3000 series card or Big Navi card. There will be new and exciting innovations and it would make no sense to buy the old model for the same amount of $$ that a new gen card has.

Op, I’d hold out for a 10th gen i7..Costco will get one with the same specs before Xmas for around 1k
4k graphics are overrated with every golf sim out there imo, even with a top of the line impact screen.

Ive not been impressed with any sim software and I have a 4k monitor. So I wouldn’t waste money getting a 3000 series Nvidia card just for golf..

Thanks for the quick replies guys. I've got a SkyTrak on the way, and was planning on getting TGC2019. Ordered a week ago, so hopefully by Christmas.

So I guess, it's not urgent. It's going to be in my garage, so it's going to have variable lighting (day/night and door opened/closed), so I'm not thinking 4K will be that useful, although I was just planning on the Optoma 1080HDR, so I'll have the capability.

I really just want to make sure I reduced the latency between hit and rendering on screen as much as possible. Will the 3000 series make that much of a difference?

        Thanks again!

I have been slowly upgrading over time. Started with a skytrak and went to a qed. The latency of shot to render has more to do with skytrak than your computer's gpu. So if you upgrading for that reason, I would not get a super fast computer.

Projector wise I have the optima 1080hdr too. For me projector is all about lumens for a golf sim. For me I am happy with it but I can see myself eventually upgrading again once 4k laser projector with 4000 lumens drops to my price range (which might be a long time).

Overall you want all you components to max out in performance in the same range. A 3080 video card on a 1080p projector makes as much sense as a 1070 card on a 4k projector.

If your projector is the same as mine I might actually go with the cheaper video cards unless you plan to upgrade to a 4k projector soon.

Speculation or have you seen it? I went through their holiday ad that was mailed out and didn’t see that

Just speculation but they change inventory a lot this time of year. I picked up an i7, 32gb ram with 512ssd and 1tb, 1660 super video card for 999 last month there. HP omen models go in and out of stock online sometimes with the better 2000 series cards

fortysixandtwo - think I can get away with a cheaper projector then?

I have the older benq1085st that I use bought new 4 years ago for the golf sim, and I just picked up last Friday a used benq 2150st on eBay for around 500.00 shipped that I use for home theater in the basement. I might switch out the two down the road but I’m still very happy with the older one I have. I definitely think you can find a great 1080p projector either lightly used or new for under 450-800...imo

You could always look for a used computer. There are a number out there at the moment with good specs from gamers who are building new computers for the 3000 series cards.

              The 1080HDR is 4K, no?

I don't believe that it is.

              1080HDR is 1080p, 1090HDR is 4K

Actually, the 1090 HDR is also not 4k (and is also not a pixel shift 4k). The 4k part that confuses many into thinking it is a 4k is that it will accept a 4k image, but displays that image at 1080p together with HDR.
