  • Will my desktop or Surface Pro 4 run TGC/FSX on high settings?

I've got a Surface Pro 4 with Windows 10, intel Core i5 processor and 8 gb ram. I also have an HP P7-1020 desktop with AMD Phenom II X4 960T Processor, 8 GB Ram (PC3 DDR3-1333), upgraded Saphhire Radeon HD 6850 1 GB video card and an upgraded 430W PSU. Can either of these run TGC with a GC2 or FSX with a GC2 on high settings? If both, which would be more capable?

If I were to upgrade the desktop, would the graphics card be the way to go? I've always been partial to ATI/AMD but I see that FSX recommends nVidia graphics cards only. These are quite a bit more expensive. Any comments are much appreciated.

TGC will not run on a Surface Pro 4. Radeon HD will run TGC, but not at its best resolution/quality.

I have an HD 6850, and I would describe the PC version (on low settings) as BARELY playable at best. On high settings, it would pretty painful.

Buy a GTX 970 4GB video card to replace your 6850 and you are good to go. The GTX 970 recommends a 500 watt PSU or better. Your 430 watt may run it but I wouldn't try charging your phone at the same time. I also was partial to AMD until Nvidia started to have better performance for the dollar. Try to find a Superclocked or overclocked version. Same price.... a little better performance.

Thanks for all the help. And Keith, much appreciated. I ordered a GTX 970 and a 650W PSU. I just noticed by HDD is only 5400 RPM. I've just done a recovery and reset this to factory settings. If I were to get an SSD, could I run FSX and TGC off of it or would the fact that my OS is on a slow drive hold me back from seeing benefits?

Looks like my motherboard is an M1 socket so not much of an upgrade I can do there.

If you buy a SSD, you will want to run your OS off of it as well. With a 5400 drive, the game will load slow. compared to a fast SSD. I believe that the course information is pulled from online, so I am not too sure how much a SSD benefits TGC once it is loaded.

Is the best resolution/quality for TGC beyond 1080p? If I have a projector that is only going to run HD 1080, that's where the bottleneck would be - would a GTX970 be fully utilised in this instance?

1080p look awesome on a projected image. No need to go any higher than that. GTX970 will run everything smooth at 1080p / high detail.

I have played TGC with a GTX 970 and I currently am running a GTX 980ti. With the 980ti you can turn up the quality on the trees to max. It is barely noticeable on the impact screen. The 970 is the best value. If you have lots of money or won some money playing poker.... buy the GTX 980ti
